Filesystem and desktop modules due for South East show release

ROOL cog logoRISC OS Open, the community driven organisation tasked with opening up RISC OS 5, is set to release more operating system components this weekend. The ROOL team plan to publish the next batch of RISC OS source code on the day of the South East show in Guildford, Surrey.

Although the ROOL guys are keeping the exact details closely guarded, the components due for release include the Window Manager, the Font Manager, the USB printer stack, the Toolbox modules, ADFS, RAMFS, FileCore, FileSwitch and other filesystem modules, some desktop applications and various libraries and modules.

Components such as FileCore and the Window Manager form part of the inner circle of RISC OS 5 modules, and when released, will reveal the internal workings of the operating system. It is hoped programmers brave enough to tackle the Acorn-era code will improve the OS and release their changes to the benefit of everyone.

ROOL's Steve Revill said: "We have a long list of new sources which we are planning on releasing by the date of the show. These will be much closer to the 'core' of RISC OS."

Some of the components the team had planned to release are simply too time consuming given the fast approaching show deadline, and these will have to wait until a future code batch release, according to Steve.

The South East show takes place on Saturday October 20 from 10am. The team, who will be exhibiting at the event, will be selling their ROOL-branded mouse mats and coasters, and source code CDs - the profits of which are expected to cover the project's costs.
