Ex-commercial software available with source code

The formerly commercial picture management software PhotoFiler has been released as a free download for all. PhotoFiler 2.08 is now available with its source code from a website near you after being previously sold by Warm Silence Software. The program latches onto the RISC OS Filer to display little thumbnails of images on the desktop, not unlike the Filer thumb-nailing support in RISC OS Select, Adjust and Six.

The thumbnails are supposed to help punters to quickly pick an image from a directory, rather than having to update an index or go through them individually. The software, which originally cost a tenner, also includes other features such as the ability to hide the exclamation marks from the start of RISC OS applications names.

Announcing the free giveaway, Dave Thomas, the program's author, explained: "PhotoFiler is an extension to the RISC OS Filer which adds an image thumb-nailing facility. With PhotoFiler loaded, the file type icons for sprites, drawfiles, JPEGs and ArtWorks documents are replaced with a miniature version of the picture. PhotoFiler can also integrate with ImageFS to provide thumbnails for all of its supported formats."
