In this month's round-up: Firefox, Prof Steve Furber, show photos, software updates and more

News in brief logoFollowing on from this week's news that a new version of the RISC OS Firefox port has been released, it appears developer Peter Naulls has produced a copy suitable for RiscPC-class machines. The 'unique' RiscPC hardware prevented users of those machines from running the previous build of the open source web browser. You can download the latest versions from the Autobuilder here.

NetSurf on a PDAA new beta version of image viewer Thump is available. Video player KinoAmp is now up to version 0.37 after its frame-skip code was written to stop playback from pausing slightly on some systems. A new touchscreen driver has been produced by Thomas Milius for D-WAV eGalax monitors. Dmitry Artamono has managed to build web browser NetSurf for his iPaq H2200 PDA, pictured. More screenshots are here and the gory details can be found over here.

Meanwhile, Archive magazine caught up with Prof Steve Furber after he was made a CBE in the New Year honours list. In the interview, Prof Furber, one of Acorn's early engineers, said he is best known among friends as "Furbie". He also told Archive editor Jim Nagel: "I haven't used RISC OS for a while, and I thought it had disappeared. Then recently I was invited to talk to the Northwest RISC OS User Group, so I did a bit of a poke around and was surprised at all the activity still going on, embedded applications and so on." The full chat is in the Jan-Feb 2008 issue of the magazine.

As for the South West 2008 show, we have no real idea what happened at the event, or indeed, if anything remarkable did. MW Software is still aiming for a Wakefield show-timed release for ArtWorks and David Snell was showing off a Drawfile-to-PDF converter. Some photos snapped by reader Mark Fraser are here and others taken by RISC OS Open are here.
