Further details of a more technical nature on Cino, the recently pre-announced DVD player software for the Iyonix, have been posted this week on the software's website. The post, written by programmer Adrian Lees, explains the various pitfalls the team have encountered. He also states, "Cino was a project waiting to happen since October of last year when Castle's pre-production Iyonix included a DVD-ROM drive - personally I suspect this may have been a deliberate ploy on their part - but we only started working seriously mid-September, ie. about 6 weeks ago."
The Cino team have also specifically pointed out to us that they have their PCI sound card driver working but admittedly not finished. They currently have a driver for the SoundBlaster Live! and SoundBlaster Audigy PCI sound cards and it's hoped that the driver will be available separately.
"We're now working on a suitable API to allow easy future extension of the RISC OS sound system (including APIs for developers and games to use to obtain surround sound etc.)", Neil Spellings of the Cino gang explained to us on Sunday.
On the subject of when we can expect Cino to be finished, Neil showed that Cino is another big, fairly long term project akin to their Aemulor product. He stated that, "there is still a lot to be done, but I'd hope to have a releasable product at Wakefield next year."
When we suggested that users may fear Cino will turn into another Cineroma case, Neil added, "We've shown !Cino exists and works at the South East show - now it's just a case of fine tuning all the various stages to increase the frame rate and implementing the stuff we skipped to get something to show at the show.
"I suspect a demo or beta will be available by the end of the year. We may actually do the DVDFS first, and release that, as it may be of use to more people than the video player."
