South West show warm up By Chris Williams. Published: 23rd Feb 2005, 20:34:42.We managed to find some news The annual RISC OS South West show is usually a timid affair, with a build up that's generally modest compared to the likes of Wakefield and Guildford. This year's event, held in North Somerset, UK, has an interesting afternoon of theatre talks and a decent number of exhibitors for punters to visit and hassle. Without further ado, here's what you can expect from this Saturday's show.
News David Snell's HTML design software Web Wonder now supports images in forms, roll overs and other goodies. Version 1.02 will be on sale from David's stand, along with supporting manuals and ProCAD+. APDL will be launching a new games CD, featuring flight sim classics from the 4th Dimension range, including Birds of War, Chocks Away, Interdictor II and Air Supremacy. Drobe.co.uk writer Martin Hansen will be showing off his improved commercial ArtGraph application, which generates colourful Jan Vibe-esque graphics from mathematical equations. According to Martin, Birmingham University's Anthony Haines has rewritten the rendering code in ARM assembly language, to squeeze some more speed out of the software: plots that used to take 37.4 seconds on a StrongARM RiscPC now take 3.15 seconds. With the help of Gregor Gellissen and Jenny Burge, Martin says he's now added 31 new example plots to build up a bigger gallery of math art: "All in all, I'm optimistic that ArtGraph is fast becoming a showcase piece of software for RISC OS. I've yet to see anything remotely like it for any other platform."
Drobe.co.uk's Peter Naulls will be at the show with his Unix Porting Project on CD. Peter also recently contributed his autobuilder kit of scripts to the GCCSDK, allowing anyone to build of the programs and libraries provided by the UPP, and other similar portable software. He also has a load of RiscPC hardware for sale, after pulling a few strings with ex-Acorn sources. MW Software will be exhibiting for the first time at the South West show. MW's Martin Wuerthner says he'll be basically selling what was on offer at the Birmingham show last December (Artworks 2.3 and Gimp-Print), as he aims to get new products out in time for the May Wakefield show and the November Guildford show. Icon Technology will have version 8.31 of EasiWriter and TechWriter on sale. Talks It's a new year and hopefully we'll see some new material from the usual theatre speakers: Jack Lillingston will be revealing what Castle have been up to recently; Qercus editor John Cartmell will be reminding everyone that his magazine is still going; Peter Naulls will be reporting on his progress in porting Firefox to RISC OS; and, Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd. will be discussing the 'future of RISC OS'. If you go to the show, let us know what you thought. Links South West show website - location, exhibitors, and so on Discussion Viewing threaded comments | View comments unthreaded, listed by date
