Windfall subscription U-turn

By Chris Williams. Published: 11th Aug 2002, 14:29:54.

Two weeks has to be some kind of record

Despite drobe.co.uk making the effort to report and analyse Windfall Engineering's recent subscription plan to release software updates for the Viewfinder graphics card, John Kortink of Windfall has decided to cancel the scheme just two weeks after first announcing it. It was Friday last week that John released details of the scrapping of the subscription based scheme to the Windfall announce list.

"Windfall Engineering has, today, decided to drop the Viewfinder software subscription scheme", explained John, who blames lack of public interest in the scheme. "There is far too little interest for it, and it makes no commercial sense for Windfall Engineering to continue the scheme."

He goes on to say, "It is possible that the Viewfinder software will still be improved in the future, but these versions will be considered new products, and there will be a price tag. If any new versions become available, they will be 'locked' to the user's machine and/or Viewfinder, as versions issued under the subscription scheme would have been."

As it stands, the Viewfinder software currently available online, at version 1.46, will be the last freely available
version, according to Windfall. Any bugfixes however will be freely available to all current and new users.

It seems an odd time to make the VF look less attractive to potential purchasers.

With the Omega looking immenent, there is likely to be a large number of good RPCs on the secondhand market and lots of users who won't be able to afford Omega, but want something better than a standard RPC. -- Jess
