MW Software is serious about ROUGPS

gimp-print library project will be going ahead [Updated]
MW Software has insisted this evening that their RISC OS Universal Graphics Printing System (ROUGPS) project is "going ahead". MW Software first started making noises about their gimp-print based library in August this year.

"I am very pleased to announce that the response to the ROUGPS project announcement was very encouraging - this means that the project is going ahead. Development work has already started", Martin Wuerthner of MW Software announced earlier today.

"Many thanks to those who are supporting the project already by having committed to a donation. If you are interested in seeing this project succeed and you have not already committed to a donation, please have a look at the ROUGPS project page for details on how to become a ROUGPS supporter."

The plan is to employ the portable gimp-print library in a system that will ultimately provide RISC OS printer drivers for a wide range of inkjet printers.

MW Software admits on their website that "it has not been finally decided how the software will be released. It is currently planned that the complete project will become free open source software that can be downloaded by everyone".

MW Software has pencilled in January 2004 as an initial release date.

Update
Get the tar and feathers ready. Earlier, we incorrectly suggested that people who donate money are entitled to end user support. In reality, MW Software have clarified with us that they will try to offer support where possible to people who have donated cash.

Well done Martin!

R-Comp's PC driver is a clever solution to RISC OS printing but, well, I have my pride and I'd rather do everything off the RISC OS box.

Time to start saving for that USB inkjet.

This whole release-the-source-and-charge-for-support thing is really catching on, isn't it?
Good news!

I can see that the Software houses are begining to catch up with what is needed.

Good Luck MW, and keep this sort of development up!

Sweet. Finally half decent printing for RISC OS.

This is great news; people like myself who prefer using RISC OS for graphics, but have to move the files to PC or Mac to print at hi-res (i.e, University library colour laser) will be able to invest in one of these nice new printers, and print as I work.
-Now, when the hell are RiscStation gonna do a USB interface???!

Given that it's a long time since RS did anything RISC OS, presumably never.

Isn't there a USB interface for the RiscStation Lite?

I must admit, I'm very keen to see the ROUGPS project succeed.
Cheers!
