A RISC OS print driver for a Kodak thermal dye printer is now available from Stuart Tyrrell Developments and supports both the Simtec and Iyonix USB systems.
The supported printer, the Kodak Printer Dock 6000, uses thermal dye transfer printing on special card to produce high quality edge-to-edge prints. Users can either plug the printer directly into a suitable Kodak digital camera or a USB enabled RISC OS machine.
The availability of the driver for the two rival USB systems is refreshing news, especially given STD's previous feelings towards Castle, the developers of the Iyonix. Castle will also be demonstrating the Kodak printer at tomorrow's South West show and the printer bundle will feature in Castle MD Jack Lillingston's theatre presentation - which is a relief because having talked about the Iyonix for at least a year's worth of RISC OS events, we feel Jack could do with some new material.
A suitable driver for VirtualRiscPC users will also be made available soon.

Woo! This is fantastic news! So co-operate. I'm getting excited. Someone pour cold water over me, quick!
Ahem.
Serious: Let's hope we see more from this development duo. |

This is great news for everyone who loves the advantages of digital photography, but hates looking at snaps on their computer's monitor.
It is also nice to see that at last there is a new USB device that straddles the great divide between Castle and Simtec. |

Saw this at the SW Show.
Nice print quality but seems to be limited to the 6"x4" (or thereabouts) format. It's a tiny printer. Quite quick but Jack L said that the consumables work out about 50p per print.
Resolution is 312dpi but, of course, that's also 312lpi which explains its high quality. The example prints shown had a very small (1-2mm) white margin on three sides; easy enough to trim but slightly surprising. |

Was going to ask Jack yesterday if it was possible to use the printer to transfer pictures from the camera to the computer, but forgot to ask.
I've already got the software to transfer over the USB cable, but would be more convenient if I could just place it on the printer and then do the transfers. |
