The pictures in this album are screenshots of the Acorn Rooms demo that was distributed on the Acorn CD-Rom at the Acorn World 1997 show. It demonstrates an experimental 3D "desktoop" environment.

Rooms Demonstration

This is a demonstration of some possible elements of a new user environment. It will only run on the Risc PC as it makes use of the new graphics capabilities. It has not been compressed in any way.

The room here represents a virtual office, and you can fly around using the mouse. There are three active objects, two information resources rendered as tapestries on the bookshelf, and a computer on the desktop. The mouse controls the flight. In the office the buttons work as follows:

Left Button moves you forward.

Middle Button freezes display, and floats the cursor.

Right Button 'Jets' to an object, and activates it.

The "book" on the top left, is a simple introduction. When selected with the right mouse button, you fly straight into a tapestry, with headings on the walls. Use the right mouse button to see more about that category, and all three buttons to pull back.

The second "book", is a guide to the animal world. This database shows off some more elements of the rooms paradigm. Clicking the right mouse button just outside the left or right edge of the cube front, will spin the cube, and present you with a new way of looking at the information contained inside. Clicking on a catagory with the right mouse button will take you into a tapestry with example animals from that catagory. When in a tapestry, activating a wall with the right mouse button, will centre you, and drill down to some relevent text. To step back a level use all three mouse buttons.

Jetting into the computer, using te right mouse button, will bring up the RiscOS screen (and exits the demo). If there was more than one operating system running then the room could contian several different machines of different types.
