The term "cracker" came about, when people started to crack the copy-protection-mechanisms of commercial software packages in the late 1980s. As this was illegal in most countries, it got that negative image and that's why it was adopted for all the "bad" hackers.

I recommend the book "Maximum Protection" by Ryan Russell and Stace Cunningham to everyone who wants to know more about hackers, crackers, hacking and cracking. ;-)
