Phone costs money, especially if your friends are abroard. Additionally, instant messaging is "in your face", ie. it acts as a reminder to say hello to people, where perhaps you wouldn't bother to phone or write a long email. From my perspective, it has allowed me to catch up with a lot of old school friends with whom I wouldn't otherwise be in regular communication.
