Without access to the application's website, we obviously have no idea why MSN was chosen in preference to jabber, yahoo or icq or a multiprotocol system.

Perhaps the author found a library for MSN that all the correct components exist for and nothing is complete for other protocols.

Or perhaps he has loads of MSN contacts and needs some more advanced features than Grapevine provides. (Webcam maybe :) )
