To clarify, this isn't about making version numbers the same across the OS branches. It's about making version numbers irrelevant across _any and all_ OS branches and variants by giving code a way to announce and determine specific features, rather than using an assumption of increasing numbers to check features are present at or after a particular version.

A related issue is that of trying to cut through the RISC OS module equivalent of DLL Hell a bit. By giving modules a way of stating a preferred OS branch and letting the OS enumerate a selection of possible candidates to load from disc, it becomes able to choose from this selection in a more intelligent manner than just "the one with the highest version number".
