I think the emulator could provide a great path to effectively port RISC OS onto a native Linux & X windows base. What it needs is some resourceful person to first tidy up the emulator. Second and most important provide an ehancement as to how SWI's are handled. i.e. Provides a facility that others can compile native code to implement a certain SWI ( or set of SWI's). Take for instance the Draw Module instead of each time the emulator hits a Draw SWI and goes off to emulate the SWI in Risc OS rom it says aha this is a native SWI I go call this C module complied for native x86. If somebody provided this framework then others could implement a family of SWI's i.e. DrawModule, FontModule etc. That way you could gradually build up the system so that all SWI were implemented as native x86 code, Linux as your kernel and X-Windows as your graphics system, Shades of OS-X. All it needs is somebody with the ability y to add an option for SWI's to be implemented as native. Somebody to document how to do native things like write to the screen. Then an Open source initiative for people to implement family of SWI's. Cooperative open source development is still a bit of a new concept to Risc OS developers but works in other open source projects.

Emulation could be the best thing that happend to Risc OS.

Didn't make to the South East 2008 show in Guildford this year? Not to worry, because on top of the usual Drobe coverage, you can now watch videos of the presentations made by RISC OS Open and RISC OS Ltd staff at the event. Recorded live at the show, the videos, in which products and projects are talked up by developers to punters, also include question and answer sessions from the floor.
