(In reply to Chocky - but don't think I haven't read any later posts) "No Unix or PC concepts were introduced by me, everything I explained was based on RISC OS - in fact, they were introduced by others who tried to object to the concept on the basis of their understand of the idea on these systems." Actually they were introduced in the article itself. No insult was intended, merely explanation.

"I don't see how your Zip files will get more bloated. For one, Shared Libraries will make things smaller, and files related to packaging will generally only be a few hundreds of bytes, and rarely more than a few K." If for example every graphics program which relied on ChangeFSI included a copy of ChangeFSI, the packages would get larger. Please note I realise this is a spurious example because everyone should have changeFSI, but suppose a new, modified version was released... Similarly, every archive would need to include a copy of any Shared Libaries.

If the required programs are *not* included in the package then you are back to square one, in that you can't assume that you can actually obtain the file automagically at all. Its not going to help me, because I don't have an internet connection from that computer. People on dial-up may not thank you if the machine decides to phone up the internet automatically if you try to install a program during the day - at peak-rate. The website at which the required files may have moved, or be temporarily unobtainable, or the file may have been moved, and so on...
