VirtualAcorn drops VAT and prices

Oh, ambassador. You spoil us.

VirtualAcorn have lowered the price of VirtualRiscPC-Adjust to 119 quid, which excludes postage. VA, run by 3QD, are also no longer charging VAT on their software, resulting in an effective price "slash" of 24 quid. Similarly, upgrading from VirtualRiscPC-SE to VirtualRiscPC-Adjust has been cut by 31 quid. VA neglected to tell us about the change in VAT status.

Emulation package VirtualRiscPC-Adjust is supplied with RISCOS Ltd's RISC OS 4.39, and the company says that it's "keen to ensure that users keep up to date with the latest developments in RISC OS."

VA recently announced their 3,000th registered user. Last month, they also sneaked out a number of free upgrades for VirtualRiscPC. The updates included bug fixes and an updated telephone number that the software copy protection system displays if the user is locked out of their application.

Just to correct a small point, we may well have neglected to tell Drobe about the change in VAT status - but since that happened in January I didn't really feel it was necessary to include it in this press release. So to clarify the price reductions on VRPC-Adjust have nothing to do with VAT whatsover.

Thanks for bringing attention to the update. Earlier this week I asked on the VA forums for a 1680x1050 monitor definition file and Aaron posted it within a couple of hours. VRPC-Adjust now looks brilliant on my widescreen laptop :-)

Is there any further info on what fixes were made between versions 1.2 and 1.3? I applied the update but notice that two little bugs concerning adding HostFS mounts (under Tools->Options) have still to be fixed: (a) not being able to add mounts with apostrophes in the path name (e.g. d:Govind's Documents) and (b) changes to an existing mount's options not being saved (e.g. ticking bootable/show dos extensions) - you have to remove the mount and add it again from scratch.

Otherwise this app is fantastic and one that I use every day.

THisn is good news apart from one thing. You can only run the software on one computer. I won't spend £357 for my three machines Any chance of a 1 user license where you can use this on all your machines but with omnly one user.

I need to go down the virtual route because I need a laptop.

Grek: Nijinsky mentioned three machines and the need to use /a/ laptop - that doesn't necessarily mean three laptops.

That said, I have two laptops, so I don't think three is too amazing.

And I'm disappointed that along with two, too and three I couldn't find an excuse to include to and free in that same sentence.

Nahh Only one laptop. I have a desktop in work used for imaging so need a high quality CRT (21") I have a desktop ap home and a wee TFT for space convenience but need a desktop for speed (image files are 300-500Mb) yes 300-500 megabytes. I need a laptop for traveling (at present in Cardiff hospital working). unfortunately I need windows for work although I'm moving to Linux/Solaris on one machine soon (or getting another) hopwever, I digress.

PS VirtualRiscPC-SE and Virtual Adjust are both stunning products. If you've got a Windows laptop (or Windows and no room for a RISC OS machine), then treat yourself. Go on, you know you want two. Sorry, want to.

Anybody running VirtualAcorn on a slightly lesser desktop? I have an Athloin 1800+ with 700-odd MB of RAM. Should it be enough to run with no problems?

I think on a decent Athlon 1800+ you can expect it runs as fast as a RPC with StrongArm

I use VA-RPC first on a P3 733Mhz with 832Mb and it runs ok. (CPU-speed reported it as a StrongArm at 156 Mhz ) I have it now on a AMD3000+ and I'm very happy with it

Being in Greece means I may have to reassess my views on VirtualAcorn if I want to use RISC OS at all. So good, it sounds like it could work well on my system. Thanks for the reply!

An Athlon 1800+ should be fine, and 700Mb of RAM is also fine. I would recommend just checking the memory you have on your graphics card, make sure it's got at least 16Mb of memory.

I've used the development (JIT) version of RedSquirrel on various machines from 500-2500MHz and found that about 1.5GHz is StrongARM speed.

All I want for Xmas is for Graham to release a Linux version so I can try it on my new 3GHz P4HT/1Gb

as my Windows dev copy has expired, and I don't use the Windows box much these days.

Can VA make use of multiple CPUs? I now have 4x Opteron System with 6GB of RAM, running WindowsXP x64 Edition.

Not sure if it's actually optimised for SMP, but the OS usually makes a good job of balancing it out, on a dual PII-400/Win2K Pro it never used more than about 55% per CPU.

You could try using the new VMWare 5.5 beta with all it's SMP/64-Bit goodness, and running VA under that.....

It would have been nice to have had an announcement in January, complementing the original one when the prices went up when you registered for VAT.
