Chuckie Egg returns as 32bit compatible Published: 28th May 2006, 12:51:42 | Permalink | PrintableDefinitive 8bit game moves to 32bit When teenager Nigel Alderton first drew up the plans for Chuckie Egg in 1983, he may not have anticipated that his creation would still be played 23 years later. The lurid coloured platform game was set to be a classic, and its publisher eventually shipped over a million copies. Now in 2006, it can be played on the latest descendants of the Acorn Electron, the Iyonix and A9home.
Michael Foot first produced a faithful conversion of Chuckie Egg, and has now turned around a 32bit compatible version of the game. Alan Buckley, of libSDL port fame, also worked on the code to allow it to run in the Iyonix's high resolution screen modes and added anti-aliased font support.
Michael said: "The conversion process takes the original BBC game code and converts each processor instruction to a comparable routine under RISC OS.
"This means that instead of having to rewrite the game from scratch and trying to get everything the same, I now have an exact conversion that looks, plays and feels the same as the original."
The 32bit safe Chuckie Egg is available from Michael's website. He has previously converted other BBC Acorn classics, such as Dare Devil Dennis and Guardian.
