Archive ed Paul quits magazine

He picks Jim Nagel as successor

Paul Beverley will step down as editor of Archive magazine after two decades in the post. Paul, who has been forging a career as a freelance journal and book editor, will hand over the reins to long-term RISC OS journalist Jim Nagel.

In an editorial in the latest issue of Archive, leaked to drobe.co.uk ahead of publication this week, Paul will tell subscribers: "I've decided that, after producing Archive every single month for 20 years, I feel that it's time for a change.

"It's not an unreasonable thing to ask, I hope you will agree. However, I've been desperately keen not to just close Archive down because (I may be biased but) I feel that it fulfils a useful role within the RISC OS community.

"I am thrilled to be able to announce a new owner and editor for Archive. I didn't want to hand Archive on to just anyone who reckoned they knew how to use Impression and therefore thought they could produce a magazine. I wanted someone who was a journalist and had experience of publishing, and I have just the man for the job: Jim Nagel."

Jim has been shadowing Paul for a while now, and helping to edit and produce the pint-sized monthly magazine when Paul's freelance work became too much. Details on how to buy future subscriptions will be announced shortly.

Good luck to Paul and I hope that we still see him around at RISC OS events as it wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Alos good to see Jim take on the role as I remember his contributions to Computer Shopper.

Good luck to both Paul and Jim with the changeover - it must be hard for Paul to let go of his 'baby'.

One question: Do the famous Beverly bow ties now also pass over to Jim ?

I agree with Bluenose : I too hope that we still see Paul around at the shows.

Things like this just shouldn't happen! But if the God Slot remains, I suppose we'll all be happy. ;-)

Thanks for all you've contributed Paul I too would miss the God Slot as it is a fundamentalist view worth reading. (I mean fundamentalist in the true sense of the word - getting back to the basic message and intention rather than someones interpretation to suit a particular point of view)

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm sorry to duck out, but I think I've done a fair stint. Yes, I was worried about my baby's future until I thought about Jim as a possible successor - there's no-one better or more suited. I'm so pleased that he's agreed. Shows: Yes, I should be around for a while to come, God willing. I could help Jim on the stand, perhaps, if he'll have me. (I wouldn't want to have to *pay* to get into an Acorn show!) Bow ties: Ah, yes I'd forgotten them. I guess you could argue that they are part of the "intellectual property" that I'm passing on to Jim!

Archive has always struck me as a quality publication, in both content and design, and I can only assume that Jim Nagel will endeavour to keep it in that class, seeing the enthusiasm and faith Paul has shown in him.

I will also miss Paul's deft editorial touch but welcome his choice of Jim as the new editor and will continue to subscribe.

I do however hope that Paul will have time to submit at least the occasional article and the he will contine to turn up at shows in whatever capacity.

Many thanks for your work on Archive Paul - I didn't subscribe but always bought copies at the Wakefield show - and the Archive CDs.

How about a special CD - The Beverley Years!

And Jim sound like a perfert choice - I too always enjoyed his regular pages in Computer Shopper.

I think I have all the Archives since Paul started it. It has ben a monumental achievement. So a very big 'Thank you', Paul.

My heart sank when I read the first few words of this in Archive earlier in the week. However, if anyone is capable of continuing the magazine with quality and style, it's Jim. So well done and thanks to Paul for all those years and for securing the succession.

But please Jim, find the shift key. I don't think I could cope with Archive all in lower case :-)

I must admit I am sorry to see Paul go, it takes a lot of time and commitment to keep promoting the platform as he did with Archive. I'd echo what others have said Archive *is* a quality publication. For all his efforts I wish him to thank him and also wish him well with his future endeavours. It's also reassuring to see Jim Nagel (who kept RISC OS's flag flying on Computer Shopper for many years) take the helm - and to him likewise I wish every success.
