Director 0.32, Google Toolbar Beta and others

Here's some freeware joy that came though our mailbox this week.

Director stabilised to version 0.32
Philip Ludlam, one of the chief Director developers alongside original author Nick Craig-Wood, got in touch to tell us that Director, that fine open source desktop tool that every user should have, has reached version 0.32 and is ready for a stable release. Director is one of those utilities that makes you wonder how you ever managed without it; Director gives you extra control over your system, desktop and your files, making it essential for both users and software developers.

You can read the full changelog here, kindly provided by Philip, and the release announcement here. According to Philip, it's been nine months since the previous stable release.

Googlin' for a beta
Everyone loves Google. There once was a time when you get all smug and nerdy and show your friends this excellent yet slightly obscure search engine that will find you anything; this is certainly not the case anymore as the ever popular Google now boasts over three billion searchable pages and services ranging from simple text searches to image searches to a fully software generated news portal (eep).

There exists, of course, a RISC OS freeware app imaginatively called the Google Toolbar for RISC OS that sits on your desktop and allows you to launch Google powered web, image, newgroup and news searches in a quick and easy manner. Andy Poole, who's normally found hanging around NoughtPointOne websites, released yesterday beta version 0.62 of his Google Toolbar for you all to test.
"After a while of no development, I have released the latest beta of !Google, a version of the Google Toolbar for RISC OS computers", Andy announces in his email. "This new version contains a few updates to the previous release version, such as the option to search in the .co.uk domain rather than the .com domain, the option to hide the iconbar icon and the option to start small."

Other software that's caught our eye recently:

  • Dave Appleby's GCCide is now version, um, we can't tell. There's a new version 1.22 (for old deprecated GCC versions) and then another version 2.02 (for newer improved GCC versions), the latter being apparently more stable and faster than the former. So we recommend you get version 2.02. Also, Select users running RISC OS 4.33 don't need the Select ROM patch on the GCCide site either.
Crazy version stuff aside, GCCide is a project manager for the GCC, aimed at C/C++ programmers looking for a structured environment to help them get the most out of their compiler and associated tools. There's more information over at the GCCide website.
  • Newly released CDrip 0.10, developed by Roger "ATOMIC" Darlington, can convert a directory of WAV audio files into MP3 files ideally using the Shine encoder for RISC OS. It'll also use freedb to include ID3 tags in the MP3s. See Roger's downloads page for more information.
  • Dave Ruck's evidently popular ARMalayser has been updated to version 0.41. ARMalayser, now get this, analyses ARM code and outputs the disassembled code in various formats ranging from plain text to colour coded HTML to the OvationPro document format. Neat, oh and it also detects potential problems in code that's being converted to 32 bit. Surf to www.armclub.org.uk/free for a copy.
