Software roundup By Chris Williams. Published: 27th Mar 2003, 23:05:44 | Permalink | PrintableGames, more games, money and more Yes, another software round up. Need we say any more?
Nex's games
Neil White, better known as nex in the RISC OS IRC community, emailed us earlier this week with the cheery message, "I think my site has enough garbage on it to be included in your software round up". We couldn't possibly refer to any of your work as "garbage" Neil as AcornArcade concurs. On Neil's site you can find four new games, the highlights being JMBMAN and Tanx. JMBMAN is a Pacman clone written, according to Neil, in 9 hours after being issued with the challenge from fellow IRCer jmb to write a Pacman game for his Iyonix. Tanx is a game that Neil's being working on for almost as long as I've unfortunately known him and the aim of this entertaining platformer is to heroically guide and blast your green tank to safety away from enemies, ultimately seeking a Better Placetm.
The two other fine diversions you'll find on Neil is Squerd, a tricky puzzle game, and Shemozzle, which can only be best described as one of those Logo turtles on crack. Don't say we didn't warn you.
Popcorn finds new home
And no microwave ovens in sight. Continuing the gaming theme, we learn that NoughtPointOne's loyal hack John Hoare has been trawling comp.sys.acorn.games and reported news that Rik Griffin has taken over Popcorn, a games library for C coders originally developed by the man and myth Matt Bloch.
The library's admittely scarey source code is provided for you to meddle with and as well as the Hive and Pong example Popcorn-based games to look at and play with, there's also a StrongHelp manual to document the library.
Combing the lion's Remane
Jochen Lueg has this week updated shareware app Remane to version 1.53. Remane allows you to rename your files wholesale style and Jochen suggests his software is "particularly useful for large collections of digital photographs". This version allows the user to save their renaming preferences to disc.
Being Accountable
Developer Kevin Edwards describes his freeware Account2 software as a "basic home accounts program which allows you to keep a record of credits and debits to a single account". Account2 boasts many appealing features and the latest version out this week contains various updates notably an updated catagories system, the addition of a memo feature, friendlier keystrokes and improved fatal error handling.
