Archive reaches 200th issue By Chris Williams. Published: 26th Apr 2004, 23:59:42 | Permalink | PrintableThe little mag that keeps on going Archive magazine has this month celebrated the publishing of its 200th issue. The pint sized, subscription only magazine, with a healthy readership of 1,300, has been in print for 17 years.
"Can you believe it?" mused Archive editor, Paul Beverley. "Every month for almost 17 years, Muggins has edited the Archive magazine through all the ups and downs, ever since the Acorn Archimedes - 'the fastest desktop in the world' - was launched in 1987."
And in 2004, nearly 20 years on from the Archimedes launch and at least 5 years from the end of the Acorn era, Archive is proudly running reviews of the welcome guide for the XScale powered Iyonix and head to head comparisons between the Iyonix and VirtualRiscPC. There's also a Wakefield show preview article, in this month's issue, written by the show's organiser, Chris Hughes. Objective, then.
Seriously though, Archive's been through thick and thin and seen off many of its dead tree based competitors. Everyone knows drobe.co.uk holds minimal respect for others in the RISC OS media - except for Paul, who has managed to run the tight ship that is Archive magazine for so many years, keeping up with the constantly changing RISC OS landscape and admirably straining to be as unbiased and fair as ever.
Despite the hard work involved in churning out a monthly magazine for 17 years (although Paul acknowleded the 400+ writers who've contributed to Archive over time), there are benefits, as Paul told us of the memontos he's gathered: "The two generations of Archive mugs, several Acorn mugs, and an ART sweatshirt which may be fairly rare now because it says 'Acorn Risc Technologies' on it, and not 'Applied Risc Tehcnologies'."
I suppose stashed somewhere we have a few Iyonix car window stickers and um, an Acorn WebTV t-shirt. Doesn't really compete.
