Paul Vigay takes Argonet helm

Pledges era of customer care

Paul Vigay has taken the helm of ISP Argonet, with the aim of streamlining it for end users. As a vocal RISC OS advocate, Paul's website is already host to a great deal of networking information and resources, and he is also well known for his strong views on security and privacy.

"I'm taking over the day to day running of Argonet, which is becoming a separate business unit within Freedom2," Paul told drobe.co.uk today. "My initial aims are to install some new servers and houseclean the existing ones to give a much improved service, including spam and virus killing as part of the email service. I regard email as one of, if not the most important, aspects of the internet, so this is what I will be focussing on initially.

"Once email is reliable and people can trust it, I will be looking for additional improvements to existing services as well as listening to customer suggestions."

Argonet was once regarded as the ISP for RISC OS users and was part of Argo Group. In 2001, the ISP business was spun off to form Freedom2, which Argonet remained part of. Freedom2 was later snapped up by Imparo.

In an email to Argonet subscribers earlier this month, Freedom2's Andrew Foyle explained that because Freedom2 is currently focused on supplying "internet management servers" to schools, the Argonet side has been somewhat neglected in terms of new services and opportunities.

The email continued: "We are therefore delighted to announce that we are working on creating a separate business unit, within Freedom2, from which Argonet can develop its own offerings and services. This new business unit will be managed by Paul Vigay who will be known to Argonet customers, having provided technical support services for a number of years and who is also well known and respected in the RISC OS community."

While Paul hopes to have more details on his plans for the ISP by next week or so, he further commented: "One thing I'm aware of from the past is that many customers felt that their voices were going unheard by management, so I want to introduce a new era of better communication and support, with the introduction of regular news bulletins and customer mailings, so that subscribers feel like they are a part of the new improved Argonet."

Well done Paul! Nice to see someone who seems to work so hard get a promotion.

I will keep my eye on Argonet. If keenly-priced ADSL appears, along with reliable email and servers, then I will be interested in a move. Sick of lost email etc on my current setup.

(with 3 exclamations and a smile) I would like a web site and email service that not only reliable but easy to use. Great to see RISC OS computer Users running Argonet, well done Paul. Cheers, Steve.

simo here's a point to ponder. If you work out the number of bits in the new internet standard you will discover enough address for every person on this planet to have a billion unique devices. Not only that but there is enough for a few billion planets in our galaxy. Not only that but enough for a few billon galaxies.

I think IPv6 was invented for a reason don't you ;-)

Yes congratulations Paul. I am sure that with Pauls comitment the our platform and appitite for work Argonet will once again become a leading RISC OS ISP.

With Paul Vigay heading Argonet does this increase the chances of the latest Fresco browser being available to RiscOS Voyager users?

I have Fresco Version 2.13 (3 Dec 1999) Hear. As Far as I am awear that is the most modern version of Fresco written for RISC OS, is there a more modern one available?.

Ant continued to develop it (it's got Flash 5 support now), and it's being deployed in several large scale STB-esque product lines. Whether the ROS scene, which helped kindle it, will ever see these updates again remains to be seen.

The Bust Internet TV has a more modern version of Fresco the desktop OS version.

(Perhaps argonet should support all the abandoned Bush net TV users?)

I did not know that ...interesting!. However unless ANT have a change of hart it is unlikely they will allow a more moden version to be released.

If the latest version that ANT has developed could be easily ported to RISC OS and they where willing to let it happen it might just be worthwhile. As long as it was a lot more stable than the current release (2.13) that is.

I got Oregano2 only a couple of months ago, I tried to get Fresco as well to run both of them but we couldn't locate the supplier here from Auckland! Thanks "diomus" for thelink info... is there RISC OS updates with it now and .... how does it compare to Oregano2? I still would like to get it soon if available, comments about Fresco here in NZ is that it is more User Friendly than Oregano2. Cheers, Steve :-)

IIRC Fresco is supplied as part of the bundled software with the RISC OS 4 upgrade along with the rest of the ANT Internet Suite ?.

Is Fresco "more User Friendly" than Oregano2?, well that all depends what you want to do. Fresco has some facilities that you will probably have noticed are currently missing from O2 such as search text within a page, ability to save webpage as a drawfile and the ability to save text from page etc. Fresco is also a lot quicker at rendering a page than O2 and uses a lot less memory so could be a better choice on a low memory machine? and of course Fresco supports the Acorn plugin protocol so in you have the Old Acorn version of JAVA it will utalise it.

However Oregano will access far more websites than Fresco and renders them far far better. Javascipt is also significantly more upto date in Oregano and Oregano offers some limited support for thr global clipboard (you can cut text from say an email and past it to the URL adress bar this does not work with Fresco).

Also remember that on many peoples machines (including mine) Fresco is very ustable and crashes with such predictable regularity as to reder it almost unusable :-(

. However for me Oregano 2 is very very stable and almost never crashes (YMMV?).

Also I must ask have you looked at NetSurf? although not yet finished it does offer some of the facilities missing from O2 such as save webpage as a drawfile and the ability to save text from page and is free!.

"Vic" - Hmmm... The !Fresco that I am using to access "Drobe" at the moment will certainly take text from an email or text and paste or even 'past' ;-)

it into the URL address bar. So what are you doing wrong? More cheers - Martin

vshears and Mart Thanks for those interesting clear points about Oregano2 and Fresco. I was aware before of some differences in the way these browsers work, but I did not know in detail as I was merely told two different browsers are not always better than each other, it just depends on what you want the software to do. While I have an interest in Fresco, my other eye is on Netsurf so if and when it is completed, I wonder if Netsurf is worth considering? It is a pity is some way or other, that our platform browsers either have lagged in past years with development and have not been a complete package with features not ready yet or included. Otherwise, I am most pleased to see so much motivation in the past 12 months development of our platform. Cheers, Steve :-)

"Mart" Not sure what I am doing wrong, I was surprised it did not work last time I tried it? mind you it is usually difficult for me to keep Fresco from crashing long enough to do anything useful with it :-)

Have you tried using Netsurf? even in its current state it does some things very well and does not crash to often, it is well worth having available to use as an alternative to Organo 2 if ays you want to save page as Drawfile or save Text.

Also keep an eye on (and perhaps subscribe to) The Unix Porting Project [link] for the possible port of a fully featured web browser?.
