acorn.co.uk domain finds another owner

By Chris Williams. Published: 9th Aug 2004, 21:15:19.

Mirror on the wall, who is the new hostmaster after all?

Acorn nut logoThe acorn.co.uk domain name has changed hands once again, according to ANS which covered the news yesterday.

The domain, once owned by element-14 - the company that emerged from the breakup of Acorn and later snapped up by Broadcom, now belongs to Tom McFarlane of letsdomainit.co.uk. The domain was registered on the 19th July 2004.

The new owners haven't as yet replied to our emails, so we don't know what plans (if any) letsdomainit.co.uk have for the once online home of Acorn Group. We're equally not entirely sure what anyone could realistically achieve with acorn.co.uk and RISC OS, apart from bringing back school day memories of BBC and A440 networks to the long moved on public, but the nut loving quarter could probably come up with something. The domain is next up for renewal in 2006, along with the similarly vacant acorn.com.

Meanwhile, there's still valiant efforts like acorncomputers.co.uk to tempt the weary google searcher.

Exactly "what anyone could realistically achieve with acorn.co.uk." puzzles me too. Shouldn't complain I suppose for someone keeping the Acorn history alive. Maybe with others like acorn.com coming up for renewal the big plan may be to compile an "Acorn Family Tree"? Regards, Steve

Off topic already, but I remember a gorgeous family tree in an old Acorn User (early nineties) featuring all Acorn machines made up to that point. I don't know where my copy of the issue is, but maybe someone could scan it in if they have it to hand...

Surely one of the many companies whose name includes the word Acorn could be interested in acquiring acorn.co.uk?. For instance just over the road from where I work is a company called Acorn Insulation Ltd, although they already have acorninsulation.co.uk registered it is possible that at some time soon they may feel the need to acquire an additional domain.

There are dozens of companies called Acorn (something) who might be interested.

For example, there's a chain of estate agents who even use a green acorn as their logo.

This could be a wise investement !

Maybe those chain of estate agents (and other investors) would like to consider investing in one of the old Acorn computer web site and we run a limited edition series of Acorn (RISC OS to us) named computers? The royalty money earned here could help put RISC OS back into financial business? Or maybe ROL and CTL are on to this already!! Regards, Steve

chances are the new domain holder has no idea what the domain used to represent, and is probably bewildered by all the emails from drobe, tib etc

Every time I fire up Browse it hits acorn.co.uk, seeing as I never got round to changing the home page. I wonder how many copies of Browse are still in use?

unlike PC warez, it would run for about an hour before it was shut down.

Slight error in the article - acorn.co.uk isn't owned by Tom McFarlane/letsdomainit.co.uk - a quick "whois -host whois.nic.uk acorn.co.uk" reveals that's the "registrant's agent" - the real owner has chosen to have his/her details kept private from prying eyes.

>Registrant: > Tom McFarlane

It's only the registrant's address that is not held in the whois database. The name of the registrant is still there, which is, as the article says, Tom McFarlane.

Cheers,

Andy.

Oops, so it is, you're right.

Makes mental note: when the task window opens at its default size, sometimes it's worth scrolling up after a whois!

The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers.
