Naughty, naughty

The availability of EtherH was reaffirmed this week, after an unauthorised distribution of the ethernet card driver was removed from a user's website.

As mentioned earlier, Dan Ellis uploaded a copy of EtherH 4.52, which features better multicast support, a new configuration command for EtherLan 600 series users and improved interrupt handling. Dan says he acquired the version of EtherH from its last maintainer, Owen Smith.

"I've been contacted by Rob Cowell of DesignIT to say that I've breached his copyright so have had to remove the archive," said Dan in an email earlier this week. "I was under the impression that there was no problem putting the archive on my website since the author of the driver had suggested I do so."

DesignIT's Rob Cowell admitted that a standard, official download location for EtherH should be created at some point.

He added: "[EtherH] 4.52 was the result of some work done for a commercial customer who wanted to improve the support for multicast packets and as such this later version more fully supports multicast transmissions, though you do need later versions of the Internet module as supplied with RISC OS 4.

"4.33 is still considered to be a good release and we have not advised users to upgrade to 4.52 wholesale, but we have released it to a few customers who have experienced inexplicable problems to see if the later version helped."

Currently, users should email DesignIT for a copy of EtherH 4.x. EtherH and the EtherLan range of network cards were initially developed by i-cubed and later transferred to DesignIT.

CJE (+0.5) 3/11/04 12:49PM	"unathorised distribution" sounds rather negative unjustifiably I think considering the previous maintainer suggested to Dan he put it on a web site "authorisation mixup" would reflect the situation more accuratly.

simo 3/11/04 5:16PM	Telling someone to yank a download, then admitting that you probably should have made it available yourselves, is nothing but a good way to get some bad publicity. It's funny, whenever I see something available for download for RISC OS these days, I feel compelled to get it quick before it's yanked - Printers+, ViewFinder, gerph's stuff.....

NoMercy 4/11/04 1:41AM	Guess I've spent too long using Linux and I've had my principles warped by there ideals, or does everyone else just think this is a bit wierd. Has anyone finally released the DCI 4 specification without the NDA yet?
