Updates from the Unix Porting Project

By Chris Williams. Published: 3rd Dec 2004, 18:17:18.

New X server, RDesktop and more

In time for tomorrow's show, the Unix porting project, managed by Drobe's Peter Naulls, has released the following updates:
  • Xnest is a new X11 server, allowing RISC OS users to run desktop X11 based applications on their computers. The software is still in beta and has a 'rootless' mode, which will enable X11 windows to appear alongside native RISC OS applications, once it's completed.
  • RDesktop allows users to access and use their Microsoft Windows PCs remotely, over a network. The PC must be running terminal services, as found in Windows 2000 Server and XP Pro editions. This version now runs much faster than previous releases.
  • Imagemagick has been updated and released following feedback from users. This software allows users to manipulate, scale and process pictures in a large range of image formats from the command line - useful when you want to write a script to process a batch of images.

Also, for those of you who live life on the edge, there's a GCC 3.4.4 release to test, and also updates to DeskLib and ChoX11 on riscos.info.

ImageMagick is a really useful program and there is a website at [link]

They don't currently mention there is a RISC OS port...

Why would they? Do you expect a Warburtons TV ad to list every shop you can buy their bread in?

Except that they are showing its cross platform nature so the more platforms the better.

Apologies if this is a clueless question (I admit I haven't had time to investigate this), but...

The ImageMagick website mentions (limited) SVG viewing. Is this likely to provide a way of viewing SVG (as exported by ArtWorks 2, for instance) under RISC OS?

All in all, the UPP is going from strength to strngth. Thanks to all concerned.

There is SVG support in IM tools, although I have not tried it myself. Viewing could in pricinple work, but will require a few minor changes.
