UPP Christmas games present

By Chris Williams. Published: 25th Dec 2004, 08:48:00.

Ooh, pretty

Wesnoth screenshotIn time for Christmas, the Unix Porting Project has released a number of new games, ported to RISC OS from the open source world.

"During the last few months there has been very important work done in making RISC OS a much more practical platform to convert programs to - indeed these games, despite their non-serious focus, have made important contributions in their own way," explains UPP's Peter Naulls. Peter, a Drobe writer, also thanked everyone who has supported the project in 2004, adding that "the Unix Porting Project still needs your support, and much work remains to be done including focussing on bringing a new browser to RISC OS".

After Peter asked users to request games to be ported, many chose Wesnoth (pictured above), a turn based fantasy battle game. You can download a copy from the drobe.co.uk server and it requires an Iyonix to be playable. It's hoped that future improvements to the game's graphics library (libSDL) will provide a speed boost so that the game can be played on slower hardware.

Also released this season: glHack, a graphical version of the classic Dungeons and Dragons game that has been ported by Alex Macfarlane Smith; LinCity, a Simcity clone ported by Alan Buckley; ScummVM, the engine that powers point and click games including Monkey Island; and a faster port of SuperTux by Alan Buckley, which is a Super Mario Brothers style platformer. SuperTux will only run on iyonix hardware.

It obeys the cache-expiry header and has a max expiry of 12 hours anyway.

Great work by all concerned. A great new time blackhole on my Iyonix. I'll look up and it'll be 3 January.

Yes, great work indeed! A big cheer to everyone for their efforts. And very encouraging to see further evidence of Peter's 'vision' becoming a reality. Exciting times ahead, it would seem.

As an aside, I was amused to see that glHack also runs on RiscOS 4.1 -- of course, that's not RISC OS, but Mips M2000 ;-)

And, of course, I never typed RISC OS, but the mixed-case OS that isn't RISC OS, but my comment has been auto-(mis)corrected, a la M$ Word! Shouldn't have been wasting time with Drobe comments anyway when there's important glHacking to do ;-)

The case against auto-correcting comments, there.

Oh, and thanks to Peter too - this looks excellent. I'll have a go when I get back home :)
