Acorn Cybervillage update shocker

By Peter Naulls. Published: 22nd Feb 2005, 11:56:48.

David Bradforth takes the wheel

After drobe earlier this month highlighted long-standing concerns about out-of-date websites, a quick visit today revealed that Acorn Cybervillage has been given a new lease on life by David Bradforth - an established member of the RISC OS scene, having made many publications available.

As for the CV's content and layout, it currently retains its slightly bland yellow layout, and we hope that there might be a make-over in store in the near future. David's style is brisk and easily readable, which may well appeal to readers looking for a quick news fix compared to the more comprehensive round up we like to offer here on drobe. And if we were trying really hard to fault its content, we might point out David's confusion of Mb vs MB.

Sadly, rival (if we can realistically use that word) news sites MyRISCOS and riscos.org don't seem to have the same enthusiasm, with the former only being updated a few times a month and still falling into the trap of quoting verbatim press releases, and the latter, despite repeated promises for site maintainer Paul Vigay, is still displaying news from last year.

Meanwhile, drobe's main rival site, The 'Bar is being updated at least on a more consistent basis than last year, although we still have some reservations about its content - lack of white space in articles sometimes makes them difficult to read, and all too often, its layout means that if two new stories are put up in succession, the second one is obscured. Perhaps it's time for TIB to review their layout.

drobe.co.uk looks forward to friendly competition from Cybervillage - but don't expect us to let our guard down any time soon.

It's good to see the Cybervillage is going to be kept going. Not just because of its excellent heritage, but also because RISC OS is promoted massively by lively news sites. I also enjoy reading them :D

Although the article suggests that CV and TIB could do with makeovers, I sincerely hope both concentrate more on the content than the design. It can sometimes feel like a redesign will rejuvenate a site, when in fact most sites "just" need consistent updates.

Meh. Enough with the nostalgia! The "Acorn" Cybervillage should have been allowed to die quietly.

Don't they mean 'posterity' rather than 'prosperity' or is the site to be a commercial venture?

I'm glad Acorn Cybervillage will remain with us in a more regularly updated form. And as for TIB - I think it's fine as it is and would hope that, as flypig suggested, the focus remains on provision of content rather than aethethic bells and whistles.

If Peter wishes to design us a new system for displaying news, we would happily consider it. We await his submission, but until then I really think we should concentrate on keeping updated, as this is time consuming enough.

Interesting that Drobe should write an article about lack of updates after a recent lack of updates from themselves! Until last week, I don't think there had been any new articles for about a month. At least Drobe is back on form now :)

Maybe that was because there was nothing worth mentioning.

Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers.
