Archive mag compiles articles into books

Top idea for dead tree strokers

Some funny dude reading a bookSeries of articles recently published in Archive magazine have been compiled into four books covering topics ranging from mastering VirtualRiscPC to software programming. Each collection will cost a fiver and according to editor Paul Beverley, "Each of these booklets brings together, in one convenient booklet, the combined wisdom on a particular topic as published in Archive over the years."

Book one will detail R-Comp's Messenger Pro email and news software and offer hints and tips on the package. Book two will cover networking RISC OS computers with machines running Mac OS, Linux and Windows. The third title will document using emulator VirtualRiscPC. The fourth book is a beginner's guide to desktop programming in C.

The number of up to date RISC OS specific books is pretty low and the dead tree tomes are pretty much essential for users new or returning to the platform.

This is a good initiative from Archive. I for one will sometimes read a paper document when it is impractical (even with a laptop) to read electronic versions. The topics on offer should provide good introductory (up to advanced, in some cases) tutorials.

And for the die-hard soft copy traditionalists :-) all the material is also on the Archive CD-ROM; despite already owning that, I think a fiver is good value. Well done Paul.

Its great to have some uptodate documentation in printed format! Its a lot easier and safer to read in the bath. I can also recommend the supplimentary manual released for Artworks as a good read.

Maybe drobe or one of the mags could review some of the material - Archive will obviously need some chinese walls to cover conflicts of interest ;-)

You've hit upon a fantastic marketing idea here. /Plastic/ documentation! You can read it in the bath...You can spill your coffee on it...You can make as many changes as you like to it and then just wipe them off...

Coming soon too, the cloth manual - so that the programming types tempted to bite their docs in a fit of rage can scrunch up the pages, put it in their mouth, and still have readable documents :).

Is it worth pointing out that Paul Beverly's announcement describes booklets, rather than books? Not that it makes a lot of difference to the information contained within them, but I wouldn't want anyone to have their expectations set too high. I'm sure noone could be disappointed with the content though :)

When does a booklet become a book?

The booklets Archive used to produce on things like Acorn as a DTP system were always very good and I used to read over and over again.

markee174: Binding, at a guess. A booklet will probably be stapled, probably with a printed card cover. A book would be glued ("perfect bound") or possibly spiral or comb bound, with a printed card or hardboard cover.

I've called them booklets to avoid people thinking they are huge; most are 48 pages long, stapled, not bound.

Booklet 5 is Internet Searching Booklets 6 & 7 are about StrongED (two booklets at 48 pages each)

paulbev: Would it be possible to add a 'list of subjects covered' to the description of booklets on the Archive page? ie the chapter titles in the MessengerPro booklet.
