Euro Expo 2006 show 'unlikely'

Organisers throw in the towel
The two organisers of the annual European RISC OS show are said to have ruled out their involvement with any event this year. Aad Bezemer, of the Big Ben Club which oversees the Expo shows in the Netherlands, said he and Matt Hendriks have decided to step back from running events.

Aad said: "I'm quite sure there will not be a Big Ben Club RISC OS Expo in 2006. Matt Hendriks and myself decided the Expo 2005 will be the last Big Ben Show we will organise."

Utretcht photoThe Expo, held in the city of Utrecht, usually takes place in June and attracts users and companies from all over the mainland, including France and Germany. It typically plays host to interesting DIY hardware projects and has seen explosive theatre talks by Microdigital's Dave Atkins and other turning points in recent RISC OS history.

Aad added that the Big Ben Club could organise a new show some time in the future, possibly as early as next year.

He said: "In combination with a decreasing number of visitors and sponsors, the Big Ben Club is still thinking about a new format for the Expo, certainly at another location and most probably another period of the year.

"I suppose the Big Ben Club will make an anouncement when the main issues has been sorted out."

ARM Club committee member David Ruck, who represented the ARM Club when it exhibited at the show, said he was disappointed by the news.

"We always enjoyed our trips over to Holland which we normally turned in to a four day driving tour of northern Europe," said Dave.

"Unfortunately a combination of lack of funds and prior commitments prevented us from attending in the past two years."

The Big Ben Club were unavailable for comment.

This is a pity, I have always enjoyed going to the RISC OS Expo - it was always very enjoyable, profitable and perfectly organized. A big thank you to Aad and Matt for all the previous shows!

Very sad news. :( I've always liked going and meeting developers and other users there.

Idea - A while back a RO chapter was opened at the Dutch HCC. It's quite a big organisation, counting about 200,000 as members and supporting many types of computers and OS's. Ofcourse they hold gatherings in large venues, perhaps some RO companies can continue their attendance there? It would also attract some attention to RISC OS.

I agree - it is a pity!

Apart from it having been a good show it was an affordable option for me coming from near Hamburg in Germany as well as quite a few other RISC OS users to visit a RISC OS show and meet companies at all since heading for a show in UK is expensive and takes quite some time go get there.

I thus really hope that some replacement event will be set up ... soon.

Thankt to Aad and Matt for their good work so far!
