New version of GCC for RISC OS released

Dash of new features, sprinkle of bug fixes

A new version of the open source GCC C/C++ package for RISC OS is available. Version 3.4.6 of the GCCSDK will likely be the last in the 3.4 family as future development time is spent on GCC 4. However a follow-up release of 3.4.6 is expected shortly to fix some extra bugs, sources say.

This latest release includes changes from the mainstream version of the compiler package, and mostly new features with a few bug fixes. The compiler package includes Graham Shaw's patches which he needed to build his free SharedCLibrary replacement. The project team also moved the GCCSDK source code to a Subversion server, away from the previous CVS server, worked on support for cross-compiling on 64-bit systems, and added Solaris 8 SPARC support.

A utility bundled with the GCCSDK that is used in the production of RISC OS modules, CMunge, includes a workaround for a bug in the Iyonix SharedCLibrary. Another newly bundled tool, resgen, can process files so they can be added to ResourcesFS.

The new version was released to little fanfare by Peter Naulls, a GCCSDK contributer and author of the still-born Firefox port to RISC OS.

sa110 (+3.0) 18/6/06 7:13AM	I do not understand the need to poke fun at Peter Nauls with the last line of this article. Peter has produced a working port of Firefox. That in itself has to be congratulated. Yes a few more updates would have been nice, including updating to the latest version of Firefox, but as Peter as pointed out many times, other programmers are able to contribute, if they so desire. The fact that Peter no longer has the available free time to further comit to Firefox is not something that should be used to belittle his programming work for RISC OS.

TonyStill (+1.0) 18/6/06 9:00PM	I think "still-born" would mean DOA. Firefox is far from that, though it's also not finished. Personally, I read into Peter's writings on the subject a possibility that he might yet return to it. Let's hope so.
