RISC OS 6, open source RISC OS and more
Show newsThis weekend will see the Midlands 2006 RISC OS show held in Wolverhampton, near its usual home of Birmingham. Organised by the ARM Club, the event packs 14 exhibitors into a West Midlands community centre - here's what we've heard so far.

We understand RISCOS Ltd are close to releasing a preview version of RISC OS 6.02 to Select subscribers, and are pulling out the stops to have a build ready for the show. ROL's Paul Middleton reportedly told punters resubscribing to Select that Select 4 is on schedule for a November release - which will be powered by RISC OS 6. ROL declined to comment, and said an announcement will be made this Friday. The company AGM is also due to be held sometime next month, it's understood.

Castle will be at the event, under their latest guise, Iyonix Ltd. Although there's no sign of RISC OS Open, we hear Castle director Peter Wild is now "back on side" with Castle following his calls for RISC OS 5 to be opened up and his decision to sell his firm's shareholding in Castle. Peter was unavailable for comment. A new website with a forum and rogues gallery are still in the works for RISC OS Open - anyone who wants to get involved should drop them an email.

The new Midlands usergroup will be exhibiting, and Simon Pyatt will be showing off a number of ancient Acorn Atom machines. CJE Micros will have A9homes and other kit, while Archive editor Paul Beverley will be selling back-issue CDs of his now closed Living with technology magazines. Other exhibitors include Icon Technology, Martin Wuerthner, the NetSurf team, Qercus, R-Comp, RISC OS Now, Serious Statistical Software, AdvantageSix, and Virtual Acorn.

The event opens from 10am to 4pm, and costs four quid for adults to get in. ARM Club members can get in for three quid, children under-12 go free. The venue is the Featherstone and Hilton Community Centre, in Featherstone.

Apologies to anyone looking for road directions on [Link: www.armclub.org.uk] if using NetSurf you wont see the page contains a goggle map, in O1/2/3 you get a square as it doesn't work with these, but at least RISC OS FireFox does show it correctly.

In reply to Druck:

Why not use Streetmap?
It works in Netsurf, O1, O2, Firefox Fresco and WebsterXL. The only one that failed was Browse...

Stop Press: I'll be demonstrating the latest version of Firefox2 on the ARM Club stand. Athough I suspect I wont have an internet connection, so I better start downloading the internet... :)
