Dozens of built-in instruments plus serial driver also released
Jamming on a keyboardThe seemingly never ending story of the 32bit-compatible MIDI programs is now in its final chapter - Liquid Silicon have unveiled a 32bit compatible version of ESP's MIDISynth software.

After years of hints, speculation and demonstrations at shows, the synthesiser program is now available for order, and features 128 melodic instruments and 46 drum sounds. The software can play MIDI music from applications such as Sibelius by pretending to be a MIDI-compatible piece of hardware. A set of MIDI hardware drivers is also available.

Liquid's Alan Gibson said: "A lot of work has gone into updating all of the source code, including the six support modules plus all the MIDI, MIDISupport and Player code and finally we are in a position to release this new version.

"ESP's MIDI Synthesiser is a software music synthesiser which responds to MIDI commands in a similar way that a hardware sound module or keyboard would."

Users will need a 16bit sound system, at least RISC OS 3.5 and a StrongARM processor or faster.

• Liquid Silicon have also released a free serial port driver suitable for RiscPC-class, A9home and Iyonix machines. The InternalNH block driver software is based on an earlier driver by Hugo Fiennes.

In reply to Drobe:

Neverending story - yep! It's just taken such a long time as there has been so much to do just to get one bit working.

It's not just a case of 32-bitting it either, I've streamlined the core MIDI 5 and MIDISupport modules so they're far more efficient and sorted the odd buglet. Lenny has also done a good deal of work on all the frontend stuff too so a big thank you to him (and to Andre Timmermans for useful suggestions for fixing the sound breakups in the synth) :-)
