RISC OS News Article
Multi-page ArtWorks 2.7 now available
Published: 16th May 2007, 00:44:12GMT  Source: drobe.co.uk
By the Drobe news desk

Boon for PDF export plus more feature
ArtWorks 2 logoAs forecasted earlier this year, ArtWorks 2.7 has been released in time for the Wakefield 2007 show this weekend. The headline features include multi-page support for documents and multi-page PDF export. Master layers can be applied to every page, or on odd and even pages, to create a consistent design.

Generated PDF files can be compressed, spot colours and overprinting information are exported, the colour bar palette can be reordered, colours can be sampled from the screen, text selected can be exported, plus various user interface tweaks.

A new ArtWorks viewer app and rendering module are available to support multi-page documents, and a previously commercial viewer app that supports transparencies is now online for free download.

The usual: good work, good new features, very good implementation .... and no delay in getting it ready for sale and purchase.

Thanks, Martin!

BTW, it is amazing how many good new features can be found for an app of which I thought it to be very good years ago ;-)

I'm going to have to set up a direct debit to Martin, as he delivers great new features every year without fail.

THe link on MW's site to the pdf details is broken.

access to http://www.mw-software.com/aw2features8.html

gives a 404

As always MW delivers software as described and on time and he doesn't throw the dummy out of the pram. Or should that be bow tie :-)

Cheers
Bob

A new release of AW2 is always good news. The list of software I want to buy on Saturday is growing very large.

Try [Link: www.mw-software.com] (instead of the 8 you can use 1 to 10).

And please tell Martin where that broken link is so that he can fix it.

Pity, Drobe amended the link to some redirection.... so I retry without the http and the initial www prefix: mw-software.com/software/artworks/aw2features10.html

For those who can't make it to Wakefield but are within reach of London, there is another chance to meet Martin (and buy ArtWorks!) at ROUGOL's next meeting on Monday 21st May.

Given how busy Martin tends to be at shows this is also a great opportunity for longer more in depth chats with him :-)

What have R-Comp produced that is as universally enjoyed, important and respected as ArtWorks?

MessengerPro is the nicest email client I've ever used. I really miss it now I'm on Windows :(

What's up Rob? Noone's asking you to use our stuff, so why the agro? I been wondering for years what got your goat. I love what you're doing with NetSurf, and you seemed a pretty affable chap when we talked in Brum. The remaining RISC OS users / supporters (which should be everyone posting on Drobe, unless they're trolling) should be building each other up, not taking pot shots at each other.

I use MPro everyday. Enjoy using the product and it has been steadly inproved over the years. Looking forward to upgrading to v5 at Wakefield.

In reply to rjek:

I think MPro/Pluto is a bit like Zap/StrongEd. Personally, I've used MPro for years and think it's great (especially with recent additions, which fixed some things that had been niggling for years) - but I tried Pluto and just couldn't seem to get on with it. Some people find it the other way around.

Plus MessengerPro still seems to be in constant development, which is more than you can say about Pluto.

Andrew Rawnsley. It is not a good advert for the platform selling severely deficient software such as WebsterXL for exorbitant cost.

What decade/century do you live in when £25 is exorbitant?

Agree that WebsterXL doesn't cut it now days but I wouldn't level exorbitant at it.

Full marks to Martin Wurthner. ArtWorks is probably the most frequently updated products on the RISC OS scene, and not minor updates either but things that do measurably add value. Compressed PDF support will be very useful particularly to those users who want to put PDF documents for viewing online. Multipage support is another big step forward.

My posting was not meant in the tone people appear to have read it as. It was meant as a serious question as I am slightly out of touch - ArtWorks is often considered a cornerstone of RISC OS applications, and I was wondering what R-Comp offered that was to a similar level of universal love. This wasn't directly meant as a criticism of your products.

Uniprint - brilliant - my school uses it - I can even print to the colour photocopier and the setting up time is limited to a minute or two. We'll be ordering Uniprint 3 this week.

Ach, sorry Rob, I guess I must have a touch of the pre-show panic/paranoia. We always refer to the week before a show as "hell week" because everything seems to end up happening at once!

In reply to arawnsley:

I presume Rob's comments were intended as simple questions - though they did come over as ill-informed criticism. As a Pluto user I've seen Messenger steadily catch up (has MessV now overtaken Pluto?), as a UniPrint user I've found it invaluable.
You cannot ask to choose between UniPrint and ArtWorks: the comparison makes no sense. They are both essential to me - and I'm sure that's the case for many others.
I expect to see a queue at both the ArtWorks and RComp stands on Saturday - and sales at both deserve to be good.

I'm a Messenger user too, and a new release is very welcome: I'll have to see if I can afford an upgrade (in addition to my planned catch-ups with ArtWorks and EasiWriter). It would certainly be interesting to see how much has changed since release 4, especially since I wrote a short review of the latter in Qercus last year (you'll remember that one, John, as you promised to send me a copy of it and pay me, but didn't).

I understand what rjek is saying, even though he was misunderstood. Artworks2 is one of my favourite pieces of software and I tend to buy every upgrade - there's always something in it that I want. I'm still on Messenger Pro 2! I would love to upgrade to 5 this Saturday, but Mess Pro never seems to reach the top of my priority list - I was already spending more than I can afford this Saturday before I found out about Mess Pro 5!

I hope Mess Pro will reach the top of my priority list before version 6, but even if it doesn't, don't worry Andrew: I aim to be early on Saturday so I can talk to you about a Netfetch upgrade and possibly an HTMLEdit upgrade. You will definitely be selling me at least one product this weekend.

In reply to various:

It may not be widely appreciated but UniPrint (or more accurately these days UniServer) does more than just printing. Many users find it invaluable for launching files and URLs to a PC when RISC OS can't handle them. And it has been, and will continue to be, regularly updated with new functionality, such as UniScan which was added recently.

I would also suggest that Grapevine is an important application - probably not used as universally as ArtWorks but there is no other app on the platform that does the same job.

Disclaimer: but then I would say that, wouldn't I?

In reply to Cables:
if you're in a dilema, you'll probably get more value out of the Messenger upgrade than out of the others you mention. The difference between v2 and v5 is, well, like a completely different program. Almost like ovation 1 to ovation pro. The other upgrades you mention are nice, don't get me wrong, but missing out the Messenger one is definately missing out big time. Assuming that you use Mpro regularly, I'd argue that it is best to update the programs that you make the most use out of day-in-day-out than ones that you use once a week or so, but I may be arguing against myself there!

Ohh, quick comment to those who are wondering if they can afford stuff - RISC OS shows don't come that often, so even if you go to Guildford too, it's a good 6 months away. I think if one bought ALL the uipgrades available at wakefield, it'd probably only come to about 150ukp (from all the companies!) which is what, a few meals out and and a few rounds of drinks? Pretty sure most people could offset that over the next few months (understood for students tho - you guys get a stinkingly bad deal these days.... grrr...)

In reply to inchiquin:

"Disclaimer: but then I would say that, wouldn't I?"

Indeed! UniServer sounds like a genuinely useful piece of software. I'd like something like that for use with my Mac. Is there any chance of it getting ported to the Mac in the future?

I highly value Grapevine, which is presently unique in its ability to support Windows Live Messenger (as it's now known) and ICQ. Although new versions do tend to appear occasionally, the application is in dire need of an update as it lacks many features clients on other platforms have as standard. Also, which has been mentioned in the past, the application could do with a front-end / graphics overhaul.

In reply to arawnsley:

I'm sure Messenger Pro v5 is a decent application, but could you cut down on the promotion? It reeks of unprofessionalism. If you plan your exhibit well, I guess it should sell itself. The fact that the RO market is so small shouldn't validate the use of such blatant self-publicity. I've never seen Martin Wuerthner engage in such practices, nor would he ever need to. One piece of advise - properly update the website, then announce the update, then answer questions or any unclearness. What I really appreciate about MW Software, is the website. It makes it all so much clearer and polished, which likely directly contributes to sales.
