ROOL aim next source release for October By Nick Brown. Published: 19th Sep 2007, 06:48:38 | Permalink | PrintableCoders line up to offer patches and updates RISC OS Open, the team responsible for opening up and sharing RISC OS 5, has let slip that they aim to release the next batch of Castle's source code by late October.
Over the past few months ROOL have asked the community to nominate the components they would like to see in the next release. However, until now, there had been no hint of when this might be. Eventually an inquisitive user bravely asked on the ROOL forum when the next batch of code will be released.
The team replied they aim to have the next batch on their website in time for the South East show on October 20, where they will be exhibiting. Following the NetSurf team's success at Wakefield, ROOL now hope to have CDs of the source code available for punters to take away at the event in Guildford.
Boss Steve Revill, a driving force behind the shared source scheme, added that although ROOL had gone quiet, the team have been "doing more behind-the-scenes work" including fixing website issues and improving their source version control and backup procedures in order to make life easier for them. Steve also hopes to have all of the first batch of code pre-built and available as an archive on their site as soon as possible - allowing non-programmers to download and use RISC OS 5 components for free without having to compile it all themselves.
• ROOL staff have been busy checking in contributions from third-party programmers. PDF and FTPc author Colin Granville, StrongED developer Fred Graute, Sunfish author Alex Waugh and others have waded in to produce updates for the Filer, Pinboard, Paint, CloseUp, SrcEdit and other components. Among the numerous bug fixes and tweaks are features including the ability to refresh Filer windows, as found in RISC OS Select. ROOL earlier wooed programmers into helping out with RISC OS 5 development by offering them free mouse mats and coasters.

Christmas 2008 show photos The Midlands Christmas 2008 RISC OS show has been and gone and turned out to be a pretty timid yet relaxed affair - there was a steady stream of punters for a few hours. Next year's event has been arranged for Saturday, December 5, 2009.
