BOFH and PFY do RISC OS

Published: 28th Sep 2007, 20:04:11.

All publicity is good publicity, right?

It's an ArchimedesMedia watch - As many of you have pointed out to us today, Simon Travaglia's BOFH has taken on a treasured RISC OS relic - the Acorn Archimedes.

The infamously irascible and irreverent Bastard Operator From Hell, a popular long-running series on top IT website theregister.co.uk, manages to put a wrecking ball through the ever-touchy Apple community - and finishes with a right-hook knock-out for Acorn users.

To reveal more would spoil the ending, so we'll leave you with just the link below to enjoy.

I've often had people remember 'the Archimedes' but not 'RISC OS', unaware that Acorn did anything after that :-/

Perhaps the next RISC OS machine, Rather than have a name such as Iyonix or A9 etc, the name Archimedes should be revived as so many people remember it. Could have similar success to what BMW have had with the Mini!

Possibly might be worth establishing a principle of referring to the existing machines as 5th generation archimedes to people who remeber only the original. eg A5000 2nd gen arm 6/7 & 7500 machines 3rd gen SA machines 4th gen 32bit arm 5th gen

What I don't understand is why In a gadda da vida is regarded as torture? Oh to be allowed to belt it out at even half volume! :)

I like the idea of calling the next gen RISC OS machine 'Archimedes'. Even after four years of looking at it Iyonix still looks like a dumb name to me. I'd call the next machines the Archimedes 1000 series - we had Archimedes 300s, 400s and 500s in the 80s (followed by A3000s, 4000s and 5000s) then Risc PC 600s, 700s and StrongARMs (would surely have been 800s if Acorn had used the ARM8 instead of the StrongARM) and now the A9. Archimedes 1000 seems like a logical name for the next step. I'd like to see STD, Castle, RO Ltd and maybe Simtec all contribute to the design, I'd like it to use Open RO5 with Select features, have the fastest ARM processor available (preferrably on a card so it can be upgraded) and I'd like it as soon as humanly possible.

I wonder if the Archimedes name is still owned by somebody?

Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers.
