Even after four years of looking at it Iyonix still looks like a dumb name to me. I'd call the next machines the Archimedes 1000 series - we had Archimedes 300s, 400s and 500s in the 80s (followed by A3000s, 4000s and 5000s) then Risc PC 600s, 700s and StrongARMs (would surely have been 800s if Acorn had used the ARM8 instead of the StrongARM) and now the A9. Archimedes 1000 seems like a logical name for the next step. I'd like to see STD, Castle, RO Ltd and maybe Simtec all contribute to the design, I'd like it to use Open RO5 with Select features, have the fastest ARM processor available (preferrably on a card so it can be upgraded) and I'd like it as soon as humanly possible. Published: 27 Apr 2009 RISC OS 5 pictured running on ARM Cortex-A8 kit Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip.
