Database application DataPower 3 is complete and ready to be released in time for the South East 2007 show, publisher R-Comp said this week. The DTP-style package includes various new features, including networking support as standard.
The upgrade has been dedicated in memory of original DP author Neil Raine, who died aged 45 in a hang gliding accident last March. R-Comp took over development of DataPower in February 2003 from original publisher Iota Software.
R-Comp's Andrew Rawnsley said: "It has taken several years for us to become familiar enough with the hugely complex DataPower codebase to be able to make a release, but it is only the tip of the iceberg - DataPower 3 will be an ongoing product with more new features being added all the time.
"The big hurdle has been getting to grips with it all."
Andrew added: "We've dedicated version 3 to Neil Raine's memory, since he developed DataPower 1 and DataPower 2. I think continuing one of his largest and most-loved projects is a good way to remember him."
According to R-Comp, DataPower 3 includes full spell-checking facilities on databases, new scripting features, better handling of missing data files, the ability to edit scripts in a preferred text editor, a new warning system to allow DataPower and its scripts to generate non-fatal messages.
Also included is support for JPEG images, improved keyboard controls for moving through the database, the ability to set and read system variables. Databases created by DP are also compatible with the Microsoft Windows version. R-Comp also said full client-server network operation is also included as standard in DataPower 3, as many users now have more than one computer on their home networks.
A new copy of DP3 will cost £119 or £45 for registered DP2 users.
NetFetch
The South East show takes place in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday October 20 from 10am. R-Comp, who will be exhibiting at the event, will also be selling new NetFetch 3.1, which can send and fetch email with Google's GMail service. The upgrade also supports easier access to newsgroups provided by ISPs and has better handling of usernames and passwords for SMTP and News accounts, according to R-Comp. A printed manual will also be on sale.

DataPower 3
One of the three important releases of the Show - to stop Chris getting all excited I'm discounting references to all paper magazines .
If scripting now works as announced that makes life much easier. |
