| Hidden Filer shortcuts revealed [Updated] |
|
RISC OS Select subscribers were issued an update pack yesterday that enables Filer keyboard shortcuts. The new feature allows users to navigate directories and open files using fairly standard keystrokes. The free upgrade for Select 4i2, which was released in April and is powered by RISC OS 6, is available from the RISCOS Ltd website.
According to the release page, the update pack includes the "latest roll up of disc-based updates and bug fixes for Select 4 issue 2."
A brief note included in the 2.7MB zip file reads: "This update contains a number of bug fixes and component updates which are a part of ongoing development that are also applicable to the current release. In addition, a new feature, filer keyboard shortcuts, is provided."
The Filer now has nearly two dozen shortcuts including control-R to rename, control-N to create a new directory, control-S to change the sort type and control-W to set the working directory. There is no keystroke to delete a file as it's understood RISCOS Ltd are uneasy about adding such a shortcut. It also appears the keys cannot be redefined by the user.
Interestingly, it would appear the RISC OS 6 Filer has, at least since Select 4i2, included support for keyboard shortcuts but the feature was switched off by default. A new configure plugin for the Filer, pictured, will perform the necessary magic to enable the shortcuts if the user so desires.
There are no specific details of the other components updated this week although the new !Boot contains some 960 files - see the full list here. Although version numbers haven't changed in every component, it's believed changes have been made to utilities and programs from graphics converters to screensavers. ROL were unavailable to respond to immediate requests for a formal changelog.
• A ROL spokesman confirmed to subscribers that an up-to-date Programmers' Reference Manual volume 3 will be on sale at the Christmas RISC OS show.

Single-user RISC OS 6 owners can drop an email to developer {at} riscos {dot com} for a copy of the updated !Boot.

Marvellous - keyboard shortcuts are a feature I've wanted to see in RISC OS for years.
I'm not a Select subscriber - I'm an Iyonix owner - but I'm quite certain that my next computer will be an Intel iMac running VRPC. When that glorious day happens I will consider subscribing to Select. |
