Today on the Riscter mailing list, author Rob Dimond explained how the RISC OS naspter client will support the OpenNap servers. With the closure of the music swapping server imminent, Napster users are turning to OpenNap to continue the trading of MP3 files.
"You can use one of the many OpenNap servers which are listed at www.napigator.com" Rob explains in his posting. "OpenNap is designed to be compatible with Napster (there may be some small differences due to Napster constantly updating its protocol). Riscster itself implements a subset of this OpenNap specification (available from opennap.sourceforge.net).
"In a Nutshell... Riscster will work after Napster has been shut down, although you will need to manually enter the name of an OpenNap server port and hostname/IP. It is possible to enable the depreciated (by Napster) resume function on the OpenNap server, although I don't which (if any) OpenNap admins have done this. I could ressurect resuming in Riscster if somebody wants to trawl the OpenNap network to find one that supports resuming.
"Anyway, it is likely that if Napster closes, future versions of Riscster will 'default' to OpenNap in the same way that current versions default to Napster."
The latest version of Riscster (1.17Beta2) is available from the Riscster website and includes the very latest source code. According to Rob, anyone particularly interested in OpenNap should consider joining the napdev mailing list from the opennap.sourceforge.net website. The authors of the opennap server, together with most opennap server admins and free Napster client authors read and post to this list.

NetSurf 2.0 release pencilled for April 2009
The team behind the open source browser for RISC OS, Linux, AmigaOS, BeOS and other platforms start aiming for a version 2.0 release of NetSurf in time for next year's Wakefield RISC OS show. The top priority will be bug fixing and no new features will be added after mid_February to allow the programmers time to thoroughly test the software prior to the unveiling of NS 2.0.
