| ROL steps in to organise Westcountry event |
|
A RISC OS show will be held next month in the peaceful south western corner of England, it was announced this week. The South West 2008 event was organised by RISCOS Ltd after the usual show manager John Stonier decided to step down from the role.
This year's show will take place, as expected, in the Webbington Hotel, Loxton, near Axbridge, North Somerset, on Saturday February 23, from 10am to 4pm. The hotel is 25 miles south of Bristol - a 10 minute drive from Junction 22 of the M5.
It is hoped theatre presentations will be held as they have in the past, and entry will be free on the door. CJE Micros and R-Comp have already confirmed their attendance, according to ROL. Free wireless Internet access will be provided, and an area set aside for punters to bring their own computers to show off their kit.
South West shows were previously organised by John Stonier with help from the Bristol Acorn Risc User Group and Wessex ARM User Group. However, having spent nearly a decade putting together RISC OS events, John told drobe.co.uk he has had enough.
He said: "Since the first South West show in 1999, I have organised ten shows. After the last show in 2007, I decided that enough was enough. Having approached [ROL managing director] Paul Middleton, he said that he would look into organising a show in 2008."
Happy birthday
The news comes as RISCOS Ltd begins its 10th year in business. The company was formed on January 7, 1999, and on March 8 that year, it was given the green light to continue the development of RISC OS following the breakup of Acorn. Over the years, ROL has produced RISC OS 4, various updates via the Select scheme, the 26bit RISC OS 4.39, a 32bit RISC OS 4.42 for the A9home, and eventually, a 26bit RISC OS 6.
In a statement, the company said it was still chatting to RISC OS Open about future coordinated development of the OS.
ROL said: "Work is ongoing to collaborate with RISC OS Open, and we would like to thank all the subscribers to the RISC OS Foundation and the RISC OS Select scheme, as well as everyone who has purchased any RISCOS Ltd product over the past 9 years and kept the RISC OS community going."

Good stuff. If I've moved house in time, I'll try and get along. If there's any way of getting there by public transport, it would be good to know what the options are.
Also good that ROL are talking to ROOL. Hopefully, there'll be some concrete resolution of the thorny issues which have kept us frustrated in 2007. How about a common CLib, Toolbox and Printers distribution, guys? |

In reply to drobe:
"Happy birthday"...
Slightly early I'd say, since for companies you usually are into 10th birthdays and not the 9th one
And your link text "ROL celebrates 10 years in business" should be updated to "ROL celebrates begin of 10th year in business". |
