South West 2008 this weekend

A little reminder for this Saturday

Saturday, February 23, is the day of the South West Show 2008, held in north Somerset in the UK. Joint organised by RISCOS Ltd and the Wessex ARM User Group, the show will again be hosted by the Webbington Hotel, in Loxton, near Axbridge. Doors are open from from 10am until 4pm, and entry is free.

The event will be held in the main ballroom as usual and theatre presentations will be held during the day. Punters can also enjoy free wireless internet access at the event, and a free area for users to bring along their own machines to show off or seek help with will be set aside.

The list of exhibitors is, according to RISCOS Ltd, set to include ROL, APDL, CJE Micros, R-Comp, Fortran Friends, MW Software, Icon Technology, Archive magazine, RISC OS Now magazine, The ARM Club, David Snell, Serious Statistical Software, Castle aka Iyonix Ltd and RISC OS Open Ltd. The Wessex ARM User Group is also holding a charity sale stand.

Anyone who goes to the show is welcome to drop us an email with their account of what happened and any photos taken.

OliverB 23/2/08 1:55PM	I really wanted to go, as I now live in Bristol, and it would have been my first time at the south west show. Unfortunatly the venue is sort of in the middle of nowhere, and public transport links to the area are not very good.
lym 23/2/08 10:24PM	*In reply to OliverB:* Sadly, this was my predicament too - I am currently reliant on public transport, and I couldn't see any indication of how to get there other than by car. I wonder if this put others off too? However, hope it was a good event for all concerned.

VinceH 24/2/08 7:11PM	I couldn't go, either as an exhibitor or visitor, because I was in Italy this weekend - so the first and most obvious question is "where's the show report?" (Just got back, yet to read usenet etc, but I expect there will be something there...) As for transport, and this is a big if, because there are several parts to it) if I am able to go next year (if it happens next year) and if I've replaced my current vehicle with the type I want, I'll be able provide transport for a handful of people coming from Bristol. (My current car has only two seats - the replacements I'm considering have 7 or 8). A caveat for potential liftees, though, is that if I exhibit rather than just visit, you'll have to be prepared to set out early so that I can get there to set up (though historically, I usually turn up with 15 minutes to spare for the show opening!), and at the other end of the day, you'll be returned after the show's end. As I say, though, this is subject to the change of car etc, which might not happen (on the one hand I want the replacement vehicle, but on the other hand, my car is pretty much the most reliable one I've ever had, despite the rough treatment it had when I was still off-roading, so I'm loathe to replace it!) And most importantly, by next year I'll have forgotten I've said this, so will need reminding.
markee174 (+4.2) 24/2/08 8:30PM	I missed the talks so I can't comment on those but all the usual stands were there. The interesting items I personally saw were.... Martin was hoping to have a new version of Artworks for Wakefield (he is doing some contracting for Xara at the moment), He has some really exciting plans... David Snell was showing off WebWonder, his Cad software and an interesting tool for converting Draw files to PDF. RiscosNOW had the delayed November and Feb editions of the magazine so subscribers could pick up copies. Paul Vigay was on hand to talk our Internet access and blogs. RComp had new versions of DataPower, MPro and some new Windows machines setup with Virtual Acorn software. ROOL were there to talk about their latest code release. And there was a lot of opportunities to talk to Castle, Arm Club, Qercus, RISCOS Ltd, CJE, APDL, etc. The hotel now has free Wifi in the hall which was nice
Minty (+1.0) 24/2/08 11:54PM	Thoroughly enjoyed the show. Especially the presentations. Felt like there were a few more people there this year, and a few more newcomers too? I drove from Chippenham through bristol on the way. If only you'd said earlier

Interesting to read that RISC OS NOW had "the delayed November" issue - I might be misremembering, but I thought I received an issue towards the end of last year. Perhaps I didn't after all, if it was delayed! Hopefully, I can expect that and the February issue to be popping through my door sometime soon.
JohnR 25/2/08 8:12PM	It was interesting to see the Eee PC running VRPC on XP on the Rcomp stand. Despite the small screen it was quite usable. There was a Linux Eee PC on the ARM Club stand which belonged to Dave Ruck - no RISC OS though.
druck 28/2/08 8:44AM	I bought it specifically to run a full version of Firefox with all the plug-ins and video codecs, and without any Microsoft software. Putting RISC OS on it, wouldn't fulfil either of those requirements.
