Star Fighter 3000 revamp revealed

Popular 3D shoot-'em-down flight simulator Star Fighter 3000 has been treated to a facelift, as these screenshots show. The game has undergone a graphical spring clean, been given a new title screen and gained some new music.

Originally developed in 1994, Star Fighter 3000 was created by Fednet Software, which also produced other Acorn gaming greats including Stunt Racer 2000 and Chocks Away. Like Stunt Racer 2000, SF3K pits players against each other in a fierce, futuristic and televised world controlled by the media. In its latest form, dubbed Star Fighter 3000: The Next Generation, the game is 450MB in size.

It's understood efforts to tidy up the game have been on-going for the past five years, and Chris Bazley has been behind various updates and enhancements. The new title screen was drawn using Composition and Top Model, we're informed.

I can't take any credit for this at all. It looks to me like a port of the 3DO version, which was rewritten from scratch by Fednet in C rather than ARM code.

This looks awesome! Always nice to see some game development, so thank you to those involved. Do we know what spec RISC OS box is required? Might have to get a copy of this just to see the new 3D superness.

fylfot: Well if you want a copy the new RISC World Compilation DVD should be on sale at the Wakefield show and it will be included on that.

And it's certainly NOT an April Fool - it's very real

I have to say, the tower blocks look awful. They remind me of wooden toy blocks that we had at first school. Considering that everything else looks much improved, its showing these up even more now.

The windows are too close together and too dark, they need a bit of shortening, and some form of texture applied to them, give them a bit more realism, and a bit less Fisher Price.

Apart from that, this game was always great fun, especially the asteroid belt missions. If this works on VRPC, I'll have it right now :-)

Well AIUI the authors of the game were Lee Noar and Chris Bazley. Given that both I think are still active in RISC OS and Chris has been updated SF3000 for a long time then there's maybe a very good chance that a new texture can easily be applied and even some lighting effect patched onto it as well.

Just to set the record straight, the authors were Tim Parry and Andrew Hutchings.

I don't know who is responsible for this latest version.
