| A full day of talks from RISC OS personalities |
|
The timetable for the Wakefield 2008 show presentations was revealed this week. The show talks give companies and prominent individuals a chance to put their work into the public spotlight and spend an hour or so touting their wares to eager audiences.
This year, RISC OS Open will start the proceedings at 10.30am and are likely to summarise the shared source project's progress over the past year. The team may also hint at what is to come. At 11.15am, RISCOS Ltd boss Paul Middleton will address the crowds and hopefully spill the beans on what his company has achieved over the past 12 months. The last last release from ROL came in October in the form of an upgrade pack for RISC OS Select 4i2, which was made available in April 2007. A source close to ROL confirmed a secret group of programmers are still working on the company's source code.
The contact added: "There has been a flurry of updates to the RISC OS source code vault. A few updated ROM images have been slipped to beta testers to try out and offer feedback on, but any talk of a new OS release is under tight wraps. It's a crying shame that ROL has forgotten to let customers know what it's working on, or even that it is working on anything."
At 12pm, just in time for lunch, the RISC OS Connect group will give a speech on their efforts to promote collaborative development. Their project has effectively stalled and is in danger of collapse, but it's hoped their show talk will attract some attention to their work. Other speakers include Martin Wuerthner at 2pm, who is expected to demonstrate the upcoming ArtWorks 2.8 release, and ROOL head honcho Steve Revill at 2.45pm, who will talk about the applications released under his 7th Software brand.
The show takes place at the The Cedar Court Hotel, West Yorkshire, on Saturday, April 26. The event is sponsored by RISC OS-friendly printers Crawfords, MW Software and the ever-mysterious Advantage Six. For more details, see the link below.

I won't be able to make it, but it looks like a good line-up of stuff. I hope ArtWorks 2.8 does very well, and it will be interesting to see the new products R-Comp have been talking about. I hope both ROOL and ROL are able to spell out their plans for the coming few months: the community really needs some good news, and some nice OS updates or newly-released sources would perk things up a bit. |

I was looking forward to the show, but it coincides with the last day of the (non-league) football season. With my team fighting to avoid relegation I really ought to be at the match shouting for them instead of going to Wakefield. It's a shame, because I really want to see a Riscbook Mini in operation - it's too expensive to buy unseen.
Maybe I can use this as an excuse for a trip to Holland in May for the Dutch RISC OS show. |

This looks like being the first ever Wakefield show I'm unable to attend, I have an Ambulance Aid training course all weekend.
I was really looking forwards to some of the talks, so please can someone get the ROOL, ROL, possibly Connect, and definitely Martin Wuerthner's talks transcribed and on line for those unable to attend. |

Thanks for the plug Drobe although one theatre talk has been missed off your article.....
As aside I have decided that I will use this years show attendance as a benchmark, as to whether I do any more after this one, if attendance is the same or greater (preferably greater then last years event), its likely I will attempt another one. Otherwise, it may become too much effort and time. It enough of a hassle trying to get one exhibitor to pay their stand bill (they will not be allowed to set-up) unless it is paid before the event either. I will name and shame nearer the time.
I seem to spend fair too much time having to chase things so the show planning can be completed etc. |

I'll be there. It would be a great pity if there aren't any more Wakefield shows. I've always enjoyed the day out, and usually returned home with a noticeably lighter wallet. If it starts looking iffy finance-wise I'd be quite happy to accept an increase in the cost on the door.
Looking at the map (I first went after the show had moved to Thornes Park), the venue looks far enough away that if I just miss a bus from the station I'll be better off waiting for the next one? |

Probably; it's a fair walk from junction 39 to the centre of Wakefield. There are some other options for getting from the station to the venue (see the travel section of the show website for details), but just waiting for the next minibus is likely to be the easiest and cheapest. |

Looking at some of the recent I think this is going to be a fantastic show with quite a few new things too see. VirtualRISCPC for OSX, Animation software, Artworks 2.8 and more stuff that has been hinted about too. If I lived in the UK I'd go! Look forward to reading the show reports and seeing the photos on Drobe! |

Sorry Wakeman, it's official that I can't go. I don't mind missing the FA Cup Final for the Wakefield show, but a relegation decider for my local club is far more important.
I suspect there will have been people missing for the last two years because they wanted to watch the cup final (I think that interests more people than non-league) so I hope they will be there and you will go ahead with a show next year. |

I can't make it this year but I do try to go whenever I can so it'd be a shame to lose it. |
