Go head to head over the net with RISC OS NetChess: Checkmate!

Playing chess with your computer can sometimes be an uphill struggle; I'd personally like to use it as evidence that my RISC OS computer can read my mind as it second guesses all my moves. Playing chess with another a person is far more interesting, especially as Colin Granville has recently developed and released NetChess, an internet chess client for RISC OS. With Netchess you can connect to Internet Chess Servers like www.freechess.org and play or chat to people from all over the world.

"I first heard about chess servers years ago after I'd finished my ChessII program but I didn't have internet access and forgot about it", Colin informed us after we contacted the FTPc author. "After writing !FTPc someone on IRC asked if I could write chess client (he wanted it for his for his school chess club). So I put the 2 programs together and ended up with NetChess."

Interestingly enough, after Colin learnt that the drobe editors were preparing for their imminent final exams he commented, "I wouldn't try netchess yet then - its more addictive than you might think."
Going by newsgroup reaction, Colin has turned out another piece of quality RISC OS software. NetChess is shareware and from the NetChess website you can download a demonstration version which will let you play one game.

As the user who requested the software, and also a regular on freechess.org I can vouch for several facts...very addictive and excellent value. Anyone who doesn't add this to their software collection needs to be certified totally chess illiterate and put in a room full of Windows OS machines.
