Audiogalaxy woes By Chris Williams. Published: 18th Jun 2002, 02:42:53 | Permalink | PrintableShock, you'll have to pay for music now Audiogalaxy, for the uninitiated, is an online service that allows people to share MP3 music files between one and another. Despite Audiogalaxy's attempts to block the copying of copyrighted music, one can search and queue just about any music track known to man. To use Audiogalaxy, you need a client that connects to the Audiogalaxy servers. Marc Warne and Justin Fletcher are the two programmers responsible for the RISC OS client.
To the point, this editor and Justin recently noticed problems with the Audiogalaxy website, in that all tracks had become blocked and file sharing suspended. In response, to all RISC OS Audiogalaxy users, Justin has the following to comments:
"As some people may know, I've been helping Marc Warne in developing the RISC OS AudioGalaxy client; I sent 1.14 dev 6 to Marc this afternoon. This was to be a much enhanced version of the client sporting new go faster stripes and much improved protocol conformance. It would have been rather nice. Honest.
But.
A little while back AudioGalaxy introduced a new version of their client - 0.609W - and very hastily - much more hastily than for the upgrade to 0.608W - marked the previous version as out of date. This may have been to cover for some internal problems, maybe to remove the potential trojan problems, or the inherent security problems that their Windows client
has. I don't know.
But in any case, this caused various problems because the clients weren't set up to do it. As far as can be seen - I've been working on the decoding the protocol with a number of likeminded people for many different platforms for a while - the protocol for 0.608W and 0.609W are identical which encourages the notion that only security changes have happened within the client. Or that something else is going on. Some people have modified the current RISC OS client to fake 0.609W which is pretty much exactly the change I made to this version, and all was well.
Anyone who has been following things for a while will know that RIAA filed a lawsuit against AudioGalaxy last month. An agreement was made yesterday to 'stop the infringement of copyrighted works' through a 'filter-in system'. Further details of this agreement can be found at

So there you have it. !Satellite doesn't work any more, and that's pretty much the end of the story, I guess. Please don't contact myself or Marc about the lack of functionality of the client, because it's not going to do any good."
Justin also adds, "Now, all you people that have been scabbing music from others as samplers can go out and buy those albums or singles. It's cost me a pretty penny, but it's been worth it."
