RISCOS Ltd. sourceforges Printers+ By Chris Williams. Published: 1st Oct 2002, 17:41:31 | Permalink | PrintableOpen wide, time for your open source medication As a follow up to a point made at their recent Annual General Meeting, RISCOS Ltd. have today publically announced their intention to release the source code to the frontend of Printers+ via the famous open source community website sourceforge.net. RISCOS Ltd., developers of the desktop version of RISC OS, stress that this isn't some kind of first step to making RISC OS open source, rather it's a move to enable further third party development to improve the Printers+ software.
"The actual availability of the code on the SourceForge site will be announced at a later date", RISCOS Ltd. state in their press release. "Please note that this release will not include the back-end PrinterDumpers. We will endeavour to support developers who need help in gaining information from Printer Manufacturers about their current Printer ranges, or who require detailed information of the back end functions of !Printers+."
If you didn't know, open source software essentially means the source code, (the work and program code written by programmers to build software), is freely available for all to modify and use, give or take a few restrictions. Any company or individual seriously interested in administrating the sourgeforge.net hosted project should contact RISCOS Ltd. from the email address linked to below. On a side note, RISCOS Ltd. have also recently released a PNG developers kit to Select users, we'll publish more on this development later.
