Alligata republishes programming first steps By Chris Williams. Published: 6th Apr 2003, 03:17:24.Another book Alligata Media (odd website) aka ProAction have announced today that they're intending to republish First steps in programming RISC OS computers, an introduction to programming on RISC OS. This is on top of Alligata's plans to publish the First Steps with RISC OS 4 title in time for May 2003. The book First steps in programming RISC OS computers, a gentle Sunday amble into various aspects of RISC OS programming whilst overflowing with BASIC examples, was written by Martyn Fox who also later wrote a RISC OS WIMP programming tome which this editor used to first get into software writing. Thanks Martyn. First published in 1993 by Sigma Press and revised in 2001, Martyn's First steps in programming RISC OS computers book is freely available online from his website. Yes, that's right - freely downloadable. We reckon Alligata like the challenge, frankly.
"The first in our new series of RISC OS books is a relaunch of Martyn Fox's excellent First Steps in Programming Acorn RISC OS computers", ProAction's Dave Bradforth declares in the press release. "This first book, details of which will be available shortly, focuses on providing a clear introduction to many aspects of RISC OS programming." Dave tells us this republishing is not-for-profit as even though each copy will set you back 15 quid, (inc. postage and packaging), 5 quid of that will go to the Cats Protection League. Email Dave if you're interested in a copy. Learning to write software may seem an uphill struggle at first but like anything more than mildly technical, it helps to have a good written guide to initially show you the ropes coupled with examples to clearly illustrate new topics. God only knows RISC OS could do with as much new software as possible so all budding programmers are welcome to dive in and get to grips with RISC OS. Featured articles The weekend's RISC OS event has been and gone and we've got the rest of our lives to look forward to. Here's a round-up of extra news and Drobe's show-related coverage and some photos taken from Wakefield 2009 - plus a video from the show floor. 16 comments, latest by AW on 29/4/09 7:41PM. Published: 27 Apr 2009Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip. The port, developed by Jeffrey Lee with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, is seen as a major breakthrough for the shared-source project as it proves the OS can be ported to new hardware without the need for a large team of engineers. 75 comments, latest by rjek on 30/4/09 3:15PM. Published: 25 Apr 2009It can be a pain when someone sends you a file that can only be opened on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux - but with the help of a free-to-use website and NetSurf, Paul Stewart reveals how these documents can be viewed on RISC OS. 6 comments, latest by AW on 8/5/09 12:12AM.
