CTL brews new !Printers for RISC OS 3 and 4 By Chris Williams. Published: 23rd Apr 2003, 18:04:50 | Permalink | PrintableOwns up to USB plug'n'play printing Almost a week ago we announced that Iyonix users now had plug'n'play USB printing and a Castle issued press release confessing the release of Printers 1.67 has duly wandered into our mailbox this afternoon confirming our reporting. Like we'd ever knock up some spoofed screenshots, honestly.
The Castle announcement also adds that the new !Printers, dubbed 'Pop-up Printers' by Castle which refers to way printer iconbar icons appear automatically in response to plugging in a new printer, will be be available soon to RISC OS 3 and 4 users. We assume you'll be needing the Castle USB kit to make use of this - when it appears of course, Castle haven't set a date on such a release. Iyonix users can already, through one way or another, get hold of the new !Printers.
When we first picked up the story that Castle had released Printers 1.67, we wondered how many printers were now supported. Castle spokesman Mike Williams to the rescue!
"The new !Printers seemlessly supports USB printers", Mike tells us. "The plug and play features of USB mean that a wide range of USB printers can now be used on all IYONIX pc computers, even through low cost USB to parallel adapters."
Uh huh. On top of this there's a 'duplicate' feature to attach multiple configurations to each physical printer, support for 'long control strings' (especially useful, we're told, for modern inkjet printers) and the ability to have multiple printers on the icon bar.
 Handing down these Printers updates to RISC OS 3 and 4 users packing Castle USB kit is most likely to be a welcomed move, supressing worries that 26 bit OS users will be marooned with their podule based USB as Castle throws its weight behind developing 32 bit Iyonix-based stuff. After we first mentioned Castle's new pop up USB printing developments, STD were quick to point out to us that the Simtec USB card apparently supports plug'n'play USB printing which is still news to us.
