K2 graphic demo Iyonixfied plus more updated software

Today's 32 bitted K2 demo tipped the scales for the freeware queue, here's some software news that's been building up.

DFI demo masterpiece Iyonix'ed

Way back in 1998, top RISC OS coding group DFI produced a blistering graphical demo called K2 which endeavoured to squeeze the most out of VRAM fitted StrongARM RiscPCs. However before we play Beth Orton's "Yesterday's gone" in a sober tribute, Iyonix user John Bell has told us that he's taken the raw ARM assembly source to DFI's demo and made the classic StrongARM/VIDC20 graphics testimony 32 bit compatible and Iyonix safe.

John tells us the updated demo source is available on request. The 32 bit K2 for Iyonix users is available from the above url and incidentally, a 26 bit version for StrongARM RiscPC users is available on the icebird site.

DirSync goes RISC OS 5 only
home.c2i.net/jjvdgeer/riscos/dirsync.html

Could this be the first RISC OS 5 only app we've come across? Ok, it still mainly works on RISC OS 4 but the new plugin system in Jan-Jaap van der Geer's updated file comparsion tool DirSync relies on a particular mannerism present it seems only in RISC OS 5's windowmanager. If a window owned by another program is attached to a DirSync menu, clicking in this child window will close the parent DirSync menu on non-RISC OS 5 windowmanagers, Jan explained to us. If you have any light on the subject, we're sure Jan will appreciate it.

The main feature to version 1.07 of Jan's utility is the support of plugins to render file comparasion results to various formats such as HTML.

AMPlay bugfixed

AMPlayer module frontend AMPlay has been bug fixed to version 1.51 but author Mike Sandells.

And finally

Paul Vigay has set up a security and online privacy mailing list for RISC OS users (although users from other platforms are welcome).

"The list is mainly for the discussion of privacy and crypto systems, in particular the use of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) and Gnu Privacy Guard (GnuPG) but other crypto systems and protocols can be discussed", explains Paul in his sneakily tucked away announcement.

But if you can't have a first post, you can't have any posts because you would never get the first one in ;)

All these spam posts in slashdot style are getting quite annoying.

Time to implement a horribly over-complex scoring system to get rid of the crap? :)

For all those (like me) who can't see past the silver fish on K2, you need the RISC OS 5.03 upgrade. When the sound dies, the demo won't progress any further. -- Simon Wilson, Boulder, Colorado

The other benefit of 5.03 is that the gamma fading up and down between effects works ;)

Its been so long since I saw the K2 demo, I forgot how great it was. I haven't been able to run it on the Risc PC since I got ViewFinder, so it means I handn't seen it on a 22" monitor and 225W surround sound system.

Just one point though, if you haven't merged the required screenmode file in to your MDF, on running you get a comopletely blank screen as it stops after it has faded the LUTs to black. Luckily I have a gamma utility in !Boot.Library so I can drop to F12 and type a command to restore the display - otherwise its a reboot as changing mode wont cure it.

Cheers ---Dave
