Rumours, rumours and damn facts Rumour The headline says it all and if you think we're desperate for news, you're either a fool or a linux user. But hey, we got facts, sort of. At the end of March, David Holden of the jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none RISC OS dealer APDL posted to the Archive magazine on-line mailing list saying, "there's a good chance that a new portable might be on show at Wakefield." Now how's that for a classic, old school, unsubstantiated internet hearsay? Even Cybervillage's RISC OS rumour section didn't bother picking it up, this is how much we're scraping the barrel here. Who could possibly be behind this portable? RiscStation are currently trying to outrun the commercial Grim Reaper and Castle and Microdigital are both surely tied up in their own desktop products? Anyway, Dave posted again to the Archive mailing list at the start of April laughing off the idea of an "Iyonix portable" albeit with a nervous "Oops, I've said too much" laugh - there's a lot you can tell from a "ROTFL", believe us. Then again it could be a mis-timed April Fools joke but we all know that APDL is close to one hardware developer in particular. Dave, like us, recommends you all come to the Wakefield show. Real news Enough gossip. The show organisers are pleased to tell us that more exhibitors have been added to the list including our chums from the ARM hardware wielding NetBSD group (who we usually nick their show net connection for a while) and Cerilica who whilst busily finishing Vantage 1.10, overlooked booking a stand. Almost. Finally, R-Comp have Quake "running smoothly" on their Iyonix, we're told, with sound, music and a slick framerate. They hope to have Quake 32 available at the show. Published: 27 Apr 2009 RISC OS 5 pictured running on ARM Cortex-A8 kit Picture exclusive - This grainy photograph shows a port of RISC OS 5, sourced from the RISC OS Open project, running on a Beagleboard - a device powered by a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with a built-in graphics chip.
