CameraDesk revealed

Photodesk's direct USB plug'n'play digital camera interface

Another developer is welcomed to the Simtec USB fold today, bearing digital camera interface software. Photodesk have informed drobe.co.uk of their new CameraDesk application which enables users to download images from a digital camera direct to their computer via a USB port.

The breakthrough here is the ability to directly plug a digital camera into a RISC OS machine, fitted with Simtec's USB podule. Photodesk tell us that CameraDesk supports the entire range of USB Canon cameras, such the Canon Powershot cameras. A camera's digital contents are displayed by CameraDesk in a filer window or in a thumbnail view.

"CameraDesk is a filesystem and application that allows you to access your digital camera from your computer by making it appear as a storage device to RISC OS", explains Chris Hornby of Photodesk. "It does this by displaying a Filer window of the directories and files allowing you to interact with them (with some limitations) as if they were on your hard drive, CDROM drive or floppy disc."

CameraDesk will be launched at this Saturday's Wakefield show.

Also at the aforementioned event, Photodesk will be peddling for the first time a 32 bit service pack for their flagship bitmap image editing package Photodesk, enabling version 3.05 to be run on Iyonix computers.

Actually, it's this kind of thing that makes me glad that I'm getting a job over Summer; I'll be able to support developments like this.

Yes, the Simtec USB driver stock pile is high enough now to warrant a card, I think.

The only thing stopping me from getting a USB card for my RiscPC is that I've no slots spare. I'm thinking of removing my DMA IDE card because with the Kinetic processor, it ain't much faster than the standard Acorn bus. I don't really want a second slice because I move the machine around a lot and it's nice and small.

And would I go for the Simtec card or the Castle one? Owning an Iyonix, I'm edging towards the Castle card for compatibility reasons. Hmm. -- Simon Wilson, Boulder, Colorado

Get a simtec one. That way if you network the two machines together you can use VNC to interact with the different interfaces

Simtec card now out of production...

but get one if you can.

although not the fastest it is the one I use cos it supports zips

Simtec USB card is most definitely not out of production. Please verify such comments before posting in future

I believe epistaxis was attempting to refer to IDE cards, but is still confused - the /8/ bit IDE card has appeared on Simtec's "last buy" list, but the /16/ bit IDE card has not. The Simtec USB card is very much in production - currently Simtec can hardly produce them fast enough!

However, "mistakes" like epistaxis has made are the stuff of the harmful rumours and lies which just serves to harm developers and the market as a whole.

Sorry to be blunt, but some of us are working b****y hard here!

Stuart, according to Simtec's very own website, the 16bit IDE card is a "discontinued product".

It either looks like Simtec are in the business of spreading lies and harmful rumours about their own products, or Simtec know more about the availability of their own product than you do.

Either way, a clarification would be nice.

Stuart didn't say that the 16-bit IDE card was /out of production/ - he said that the 16-bit card /wasn't on the "last buy" list/ - which is something completely different.
